3 Course Information Dates:
Session #1—December 2, 2009 (Early Release, 3 hrs.) Session #2—March 10, 2010 (Early Release, 3 hrs.) Session #3—April 13, 2010 (Planning, 1 hr) Credits: 7 contact hours + 6 lab hours = 1.0 credit Reading OR Teaching Strategies Credit.

4 How do we design instruction to lead our students to deeper learning?
Objectives: Participants will be able to easily adapt the strategies for use in their classrooms. Participants will use the strategies to encourage deeper thinking from their students. Essential Question: How do we design instruction to lead our students to deeper learning?

5 Strategy Review: Window Notes
Handouts: Window Notes Write-On Copy—H-28 Guidelines for Effective Questioning— (already in notebooks) Directions: Review the “Guidelines for Effective Questioning,” and make notes about your immediate thoughts and reactions using the Window Notes graphic organizer. Write at least 6-8 notes using any appropriate sections of the chart. 15 to work and discuss

Handouts: Sample Question Stems Based on Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy—H-29-1, H-29-2 Higher Level Questioning—6-3-1 Planning for Higher Level Questioning—H-30 (write on copy) Video: Temple Grandin: The World Needs All Kinds of Minds 15 min. for video, 10 min. for questioning, 5 for handout and discussion

7 Strategy Practice: Plan a higher level questioning session for a lesson you teach, using the Bloom’s taxonomy (revised) question stems. Complete the “Planning for Higher Level Questioning” sheet (H-30) on your own or with your grade level/subject PL Be prepared to share your work with the group. 20 minutes to work.

8 Reflection: Take an index card from the table and reflect on the following questions: Unlined Side: Rate your comfort level writing higher level questions from 1-5 (1=HELP! , 5=I GOT IT!). Lined Side: What are the plus/deltas of the strategy? How will you incorporate this strategy in your lesson plans? 10 min.
