Use information from ‘China – history and background’ reading and the YouTube videos from your written instructions to learn more about the role of dynasties in Chinese history.

The Fall from World Trade Dominance
A trade imbalance - China made what the world wanted, and China needed very little from the world British investors shipped cotton and opium into China Opium was outlawed The Opium Wars China declared war on opium and Britain declared war on China China lost. Thus followed 100 years of "national humiliation" The country became fractured into warring tribes If you would like to include more information, another point you could talk about is Japan’s attempt to take over China in WWI and WWII Use information from the ‘China – history and background’ reading and the YouTube videos from your written instructions to learn more about how China fell from world trade dominance.

Communism Mao Zedong kills hundreds of thousands, uniting ‘Red China’in 1949 1976: earthquake killed an estimated 700,000 International relief was refused Gang of Four Rule ended in 1976 when Mao died 1989 Tiananmen Square Protests: students protested, thousands were killed Fear of another civil war led to openness and an industrial revolution like none the world has seen before Earthquake relief was not only refused, the government denied anything happened (“no one died”). The government also denied the protests of 1989 happened. Use information from the ‘China – history and background’ reading and the YouTube videos from your written instructions to learn more about the rise of communism in China.

Chinese Culture Centuries of oppression are displayed in the video ‘Cancer Villages’. Pick out five examples of the old oppression and the new China. Tell their story and share the examples of oppression you found. Compare the consequences – What would happen if a factory did this in the United States today? We have nothing in the United States that compares. In China, the state owns all land but not the buildings. Factories are given ‘land use rights’ that last for 50 years and can be removed/destroyed or built at will by the state. Farm ground is called collectives; the buildings are owned by the farmer.
