Paradox
2
Definition A Contradicting statement
3
Examples "Some day you will be old enough to start reading fairy tales again.” "War is peace.“ "Freedom is slavery.“ "Ignorance is strength."
4
Why am I learning This? A paradox is used to make you think about the confusing contradiction that you just read. The hope is that you will pull out an underline meaning that explains why the author used it there.
5
Starburst and Paradox The starburst commercial includes these paradox’s : Starburst (solid on the outside juicy liquid inside) A scotch Korean An albino lifeguard See for yourself….
6
…And now for our feature presentation…
When you think paradox… …think contradictions… …and when you think contradictions… …think Starburst!!!
7
Its all about... CONTRADICTIONS!!!
8
Step by Step You See The Word Paradox
Hmmmmm Why Does That Remind Me of Starburst??? Oh Yeah… That Starburst Commercial… What was it about??? Oh… Contradictions Ok so… Paradox = Contradictions
9
Paradox in The Outsiders
The Sun Ponyboy tells Cherry that even though they are in two different worlds thy both see the same sun. I think this is there to show that no matter how far away you are from someone you can always be close to them in some way.
10
Paradox in The Giver The Giver
He looks very very very old but in reality he isn’t that old, he’s more like old with knowledge. It’s like 50 going 500. I think this was used to show what excessive knowledge can do to someone. How it can wear them down until they are old and wrinkly.
11
Paradox in Fahrenheit 451 Mildred and Montag’s bedroom
In the beginning Montag goes into his bedroom calling it empty when in fact it wasn’t empty at all. I think that Bradbury did this to stress what death feels like to the people around, one big empty room
12
… in The Tempest Antonio He says “the past is the future”
I think Shakespeare used this paradox to show that history repeats itself. No matter how much you fight it the old always has a way of coming back.
13
… in Pop Culture War is Peace
War is here to achieve the ultimate goal of peace. There are people fighting and dieing out there in this world all to reach peace. So, war creates peace, and peace creates war.
14
Homework Write a few sentences explaining a paradox. Tell me what you think the author intended you to get out of it. The meaning behind the words.
15
The End The End Paradox The End
