7. Human growth and development placement
Requirement for Human Growth & Development (HGD) Course
10 weekly visits of 3 hours each
Fall Semester = Early Education settings w/ children ages Birth– 5 years old
Spring Semester = 6 years old– older adults (afterschool programs, shelters, adult day cares, homes for the elderly)
First professional experience: observing minutes, assist teachers/children
Relating theory & practice to placement

9. Choosing a Site
FEO staff will guide your student through the selection process tomorrow
Work with each student’s class schedule, identifying best day and time for placement
Types of sites for first semester:
Preschools
Head Start Programs
Private/Independent Daycare Centers
Parent Co-ops
Employee Sponsored Daycares
Review experience scale and inform students about the info sheet attached to each application.

Sites are located in the surrounding neighborhoods of Boston. All sites are accessible by the MBTA!
FEO provides directions to all sites, and Neighborhood Trips during Orientation Week

12. Logistics Placement Requirements:
All Sites require a background check (CORI) through the Department of Early Education and Care (EEC). Students will need to provide the following:
Government issued photo ID (Drivers License, Passport, State ID)
Places of residence for past 7 years with dates
Social Security Number
Wheelock College Health Certificate (keep a copy of this!)
Orientation in the Fall (dates TBA)

13. Background Checks
All of our sites require students complete a background check (CORI) through the Department of Early Education and Care
Some sites also require students get fingerprinting completed for a fee of $35
Tomorrow, we will have instructions for the students, guiding them in completing the needed requirements
If your student selects a site for fingerprinting, we will direct them to register online during FYI signups, and the sessions will be held on campus in September and the fee ($35) will be added their tuition bill

19. WHAT IS JUMPSTART?
Jumpstart is a national, AmeriCorps affiliated organization whose mission is to close the kindergarten readiness gap.

As part of Jumpstart, you will—
fulfill your field experience requirement by serving both semesters in a local preschool classroom.

As part of Jumpstart, you will—
be placed on a team with other Jumpstart Corps Members.
be matched with preschool children from under-resourced communities.
provide language, literacy, and social-emotional programming.

23. the JUMPSTART experience
As part of Jumpstart, you will—
serve 12 to 15 hours per week.
This includes being in the classroom, planning / prepping, meeting, training and seminar. *
* There is a seminar course that goes along with Jumpstart that meets
every other Wednesday evening.

As part of Jumpstart, you will—
earn approximately $1,200 in a Segal Education Award from AmeriCorps after the completion of your service. *

I learned exactly what I want to do as a career, and broadened my horizons through what I have been able to do in Jumpstart.
The highlight of my year was seeing the growth in the children I worked with, and just how thankful and appreciative the families were.
I learned how to problem-solve, adapt and talk through things with my team.
I learned how to organize myself and manage my time so much more effectively. I learned how to balance everything I had going on.
