Welcome to Athol Royalston Regional School District’s Online training for substitute teachers and substitute para-professionals… During this presentation you will review: Our school district expectations Our school policies Our school procedures Our school requirements And we will try to give you a few extra tips to make your experience a success!

3 At the end of the presentation there will be a form and a quiz to complete. You will need to send them to the Athol Royalston Regional School District’s Superintendent’s Office before you can officially be called to work. No cheating! Don’t skip ahead without reviewing these slides! This is important stuff ! So, please review carefully and call us with any other questions that you might have. 4 To make things even easier, and because we want you to get it right, here is the quiz that we will give you at the end of this presentation. What should you do upon arriving at school? If you meet a friend or parent at Market Basket, can you discuss anything about students or staff? When is it OK to touch a child? If you witness a student calling another student a name, what should you do? If you witness a fight, what should you do? If a student smells of alcohol or marijuana, what should you do? Name one strategy that you can try to use with a disruptive class.

5 First, there’s the paperwork…
Application- You need to complete a current application, if we do not have one on file. You can find the application on our website. We need a current phone number and current address. helps also if you have an address. We can’t call you to work without an updated phone number! A CORI form must be completed every three years with us. Even if you have a completed CORI with another organization, you must have one on file with us. You will need to complete the Ethics training portion of our mandatory staff training. When you have finished, you will need to print out the certificate at the end of the training and submit it at our central office.

6 Fingerprinting- Fingerprinting is required of all school employees as signed into Massachusetts law in 2013. Visit Choose Massachusetts Go to the locations tab. Choose the location nearest to you. Go to online scheduling Follow the instructions on the welcome page Application details: Agency-Pre-K-12th grade education (ESE) Check- all other school personnel Confirm agency-Yes Provider ID: Confirm Provider- Correct Appointment details- enter your zip code Choose a location, date, and time Follow the remaining instructions. Cost $35 and $55 for certified teachers.

7 And, one other thing… Please check with our central office to make sure that we have a W-4 form on file and that all of our payroll forms are complete. We can’t pay you until you do.

8 ARRSD Expectations: If you accept a job, we expect that you will be there. If you accept a job we expect that you will be on time. If you accept a job, we expect that you will dress appropriately… No shorts, sweats, t-shirts, flip flops Low cut clothing

9 ARRSD Procedures: Arrive early so you have time to read plans and collect materials. Sign in at the front office. Follow the plans as the teacher writes them! Ask if you have additional duties. Do the duties that are assigned! Leave notes for the classroom teacher. What did you complete? What needs more time? Which students had a good day? Do NOT leave students unattended in class or outside. Respect the procedures of the school!

10 Please be firm, fair, and kind!
NO Cell phone use NO smoking on school property! NO leaving the building without permission of the Principal! NO physical contact with students! NO handing out food or candy! Don’t ignore problems or disagreements among students! Please respect all kids! Please leave positive notes for the teacher! Please help out at lunch and/or recess! Please enjoy our school! Please be firm, fair, and kind!

11 ARRSD Expectations: BE positive! Be nice! Be respectful! Don’t try to be a buddy; just be a kind, caring teacher. Use appropriate language. Be familiar with the school’s procedures for discipline. Ask for help, when you need help.

HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act Privacy and Security Rules)-FERPA (Family Educational Rights Act) Means- Everything that happens in school, stays in school! Student rights are protected by law! No talking about students with anyone outside of school!

14 The End of the Day! Don’t forget to hand out notes BEFORE the students go home! Don’t forget to start getting ready to go home about 10 minutes before dismissal. Don’t forget to sign out in the office. Don’t forget to leave things neat. Don’t forget to leave a note.
