Giving a formal speech goes beyond just reading our essay to the class For this practice speech we will focus on: 1. Expression and Delivery Eye Contact Body Language Speaking Rate(Use of pauses) 2. Audience Engagement and Rhetorical Elements Speech incorporates the following appeals: Logos (Logic) Pathos (Emotion) Ethos (Ethics)

3 What do I Speak About? For this Practice Speech, you will give a 90 second speech in which you speak about your Argumentative Essay topic. You will articulate: The thesis statement from your essay Evidence to support the change One counterargument with rebuttal

4 How Will I be Graded? Let’s take a look at the next few slides and see a progression from a non proficient speaker to a masterful speaker…

5 Non Proficient (Delivery) 4-6 points/10
Speaker was hard to hear or understand Voice or tone distracted from purpose of speech Excessive use of verbal fillers Speech marginally rehearsed, distracting use of notes Little eye contact with audience Poor, slouchy, or fidgety posture

6 Non Proficient (Engagement and Rhetorical Devices)
Rhetorical elements were not present Rhetorical elements were confusing, misleading, poorly employed Audience appeared not to be considered in the preparation/delivery of this speech

7 Proficient (Delivery) 7-8/10
Speaker was easy to hear and understand Tone was conversational, purposeful Voice sounded natural, neither patterned nor monotone Speaker pronounced words clearly, correctly, with only a few verbal fillers Speech clearly rehearsed, mostly memorized Strong eye contact with entire audience Posture conveyed confidence

Speaker was enjoyable to hear; used expression and emphasis Speaker used voice to create an emotional response in audience Speech is rehearsed/memorized; minimal use of notes Posture was commanding and purposeful

10 Masterful (Engagement and Rhetoric)
Speaker dynamically incorporated a range of appropriate rhetorical elements Audience was impacted, moved, or impressed on multiple levels: logical, emotional, and ethical

11 Visual Aid You will submit a visual aid that will displayed on the screen while you deliver your speech. Find an image that depicts your topic, copy and past it into a google slide, and then share to me at by Wednesday at 11:59pm

12 Speeches We will begin speeches on Thursday, October 5th.
We will finish the speeches on Tuesday October 10th and Wednesday October 11th (if needed).
