Before we begin I would like to introduce myself….and the organization I represent.
Developmental Studies Center is a nonprofit organization.
The organization has been working with schools for the past 26 years.
For over a decade, DSC has been developing, refining, implementing, and evaluating programs in partnerships with after school programs around the country.

25% off purchase of KidzLit and /or KidzMath (for sites serving low-income youth), 10% for all other sites
Free online course for KidzLit and/or KidzMath
Free training for 2-3 staff from each site (applicable in areas where there are multiple sites participating)

Like all of the programs from DSC our after school programs integrate academic and social learning in a way that is appropriate for after school.
Like I mentioned, our programs work well during out-of-school time, because often social learning is a focus in after school programming.
Both programs take the skills and concepts that children are learning during the school day and present them in a different way after school to allow the children additional time to practice.

AfterSchool KidzMath takes the math skills and concepts that are being taught in the classroom and presents them to children after school in a fun way.
The Games focus on number and the story guides focus on number , measurement, and geometry.
AfterSchool KidzMath not only focuses on the math skills children are learning in school but also the important social skills needed to work together.

Social Focus in Games and Story Guides
Making decisions
Giving and getting help
Playing/working responsibly
The social focuses for both the games and the story guides are the same.
We give children many opportunities to make decisions from who is going to go first to changing the rules of the game
We help children learn to ask for help when needed, wait to be asked to give help and most importantly how to give help without giving the answer.
Children also learn to play responsibly, taking care of the materials as well as others feelings.

What is KidzLit?
HOLD UP MATERIALS AND WALK THROUGH…
AfterSchool KidzLit is made up of 120 carefully selected children’s books and a Leader’s guide to accompany each book.
The leader’s guides are packaged in thematic sets of 10. There are 50 for K-3, 50 for 3-5 and 20 for 6-8. (SHOW 1 SET FROM EACH)
(UNPACK ONE SET…)
Each Leader’s Guide contains many activity choices for each of a five part process to introduce a story, read it and connect to it. Use one book as an example of each theme. (SHOW GUIDE)
Each set of 10 guides comes with a Quick Tips guide that has ideas to use with any of the books…ways to get children talking, activities to do with cool words, etc. (SHOW) The guides are organized so that they can be easilly shared.
There are also journals available that children can work in. These journals come with the larger combination sets of the program or can be purchased separately.

Wrap-Up
Each guide that accompanies each book follows a five part process. The are several choice of activities to choose from for each part of the process.
First the leader introduces the story with an activity.
Then the story can be read aloud or children can read independently with partners, cross-age buddies, or in book clubs. If using the guides for partner reading or book clubs, there is a section that can be copied from the guide and given to the children to work on in groups or pairs.
Then the children talk about the story using open-ended questions found in the guide.
After discussing the story, the children experience a connection activity. ..
And finally to wrap-up the book, a short activity often using the cool words from the story is experienced.
