carbohydrates – the starches and sugars that provide energy simple carbohydrates –Simple carbohydrates are also known as sugars. Chocolate, pizza, soft drinks complex carbohydrates – Complex carbohydrates are often referred to as starch or starchy foods. They are found naturally in foods and also refined in processed foods. Fruits, peanuts, cereals, breads, pastas proteins – nutrients used to repair body cells and tissues

fats – nutrients that supply energy, keep the skin healthy, and promote normal growth saturated fats – fats that are solid at room temperature Meat, chicken, dairy products unsaturated fats – fats that are liquid at room temperature oil, nuts, olives, avocados vitamins – substances that help to regulate the body’s functions, produce energy, & fight infections

minerals – nutrients that strengthen bones and teeth, help keep the body health, and keep the heart and other organs working properly water – helps with digestion, carries nutrients throughout the body, removes waste from the body, and regulates the body temperature ABC’s of good health: A – aim for fitness B – build a healthy base C – choose sensibly

fiber – the part of grains, fruits, and vegetables that the body cannot break down, helps move waste out of the system, & helps prevent some diseases (i.e. – whole grain foods) cholesterol – a waxy substance used by the body to build cells and make other substances Too high cholesterol can lead to heart disease Reduce your sugar and sodium intake.
