Comma, Short Quotations
Use a comma to separate from the rest of the sentence a complete sentence set off in quotation marks. If the quoted material is interrupted, place a comma after the first part and before the second part. beginning quotation "Nobody seems to work around here," grumbled Mr. Lloyd. ending quotation She answered loudly, "Place the material on the table." Restrictive & Non-restrictive modifiers
Groups of words that modify nouns or pronouns may be essential to the meaning of a sentence and in identify which one, thus restrictive; on the other hand, they may add information that, while interesting, is not necessary to known which one, therefore nonrestrictive. Restrictive: All students who failed the exam must be retested tomorrow. (only students who failed the exam must be retested) Non-restrictive: All students, who failed the exam, must be retested tomorrow. (all students failed the exam and must be retested)
