9/11/2018 2:49 AM Great female scientists Rosalind Franklin was a biophysicist and X-ray crystallographer who collected data that led to determining the structure of DNA. James Watson and Francis Crick wrote a paper using the data and received a Nobel Prize after Rosalind’s death. Why might Rosalind not have also received the Nobel Prize? Start class with this question to get students thinking. Sample answers could not include that women’s contributions to science were not valued, that a dead person cannot receive a Nobel Prize, or that collecting data isn’t viewed as important as writing a paper. © 2014 Microsoft Corporation. Women have made many important discoveries that have advanced the field of medicine. Sometimes these discoveries and contributions have gone unrecognized, underappreciated, or ignored. In this lesson we will explore these contributions.

9/11/2018 2:49 AM Great female scientists Try working through the following questions related to our big question: How have women contributed to the field of medicine? 1 Search Who was Marie Curie? How did her work contribute to medicine? 2 Who was Clara Barton? How did her work contribute to medicine? 3 Who was Pat Goldman-Rakic? How did her work contribute to medicine? 4 Who was Rosalyn Sussman Yalow? How did her work contribute to medicine? 5 Who is Cherie Stabler? How does her work contribute to medicine? These questions can be used or replaced with student generated questions that would help uncover an answer to the big question of, “How have women contributed to the field of medicine?” Depending on time and the amount of technology available, these questions could be approached in a number of ways. Each student, or each group of students could answer all the questions, or questions could be assigned to groups or individuals. Within groups, students could each approach a different question or perform different roles in answering each question. For example, one student could type, while others searched, and another could share their findings. Students could gather all the information they find in OneNote. © 2014 Microsoft Corporation. 9/11/2018 2:49 AM Great female scientists Try working through the following questions related to our big question: How have women contributed to the field of medicine? 10 minutes The amount of time you give students here is highly dependent on how they are grouped and how you have divided the questions. 10 minutes is probably sufficient time to answer one question, but is certainly not enough time to answer all the questions. © 2014 Microsoft Corporation. 9/11/2018 2:49 AM Great female scientists Scenario: You are designing museum that honors the contributions of women to medicine. Use Office Sway to create a website showcasing your work to a group of investors. Include the following: Draw up a layout of how the museum will be arranged. How will the exhibits be organized and themed? How will you present information on the women and their contributions in a way that people will want to see? Museums often have interactive exhibits. Include plans for one interactive exhibit in your museum. Museums are also involved in the current state of the field. Include plans for one program that your museum could support that would encourage women to enter the field of medical research. © 2014 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
