Reagan’s Unit 3 Vocab By: Reagan M
2
Algebraic expression An expression that uses a variable Examples X+3=6
K+9=40
3
Cell In a columns and rows grid, where the columns and rows meet.
4
Columns A column is where a section of cells go up and down a columns and rows grid
5
Rows A rows is where a section of cells go across a columns and rows grid
6
Evaluate (a formula) When you substitute a value for the variable, then perform a operation 3y + 2y when 5 = y. 1st step 3(5) + 2(5) 2nd step 3(5) + 2(5) = = 25 4X+6X when X= 6 4(6) +6(6) 2nd step 4(6) +6(6)= 24+36= 60
7
Formula A general rule for finding the value of something, a formula is often written using letters, called variables that stand for quantities involved. A=l*W A= area of a rectangle l= it’s length W= it’s width W+X= W=4 X=5
8
General Pattern A general pattern is when a number or operation does not change when the pattern changes. Variables are usually used to represent the numbers that do change 0*X=0 any number multiplied by 0 will always end up being 0 1*X=X any number multiplied by one will always end up being the number one was multiplied by.
9
Rate A comparison by division of two quantities with unlike units.
67 miles per hour is a rate that compares distance with time 2 pages a second compares time and quantities
10
Unit rate A rate with the number one in it.
11
Special case An example of a general pattern.
2*2=4 is the special case for w*w=x 6*5=30 is the special case for y*h=30
12
Variable A letter or symbol that represents a number, A variable can stand for one number or it can stand for many numbers X*4=24 X=6 H*H*8=32 H=4
13
Square Root The square root of a number n is a number that, when multiplied by itself, gives the number n. 4 is the square root of 16 because 4*4=16. 8 is the square root of 64 because 8*8=64.
