Short wavelength radiation from the sun reaches
the Earth and is absorbed by the surface. After
being absorbed the short wavelengths are then
reradiated back into the atmosphere at longer,
lower energy wavelengths that cannot travel back into
space. These longer
wavelengths are
absorbed by greenhouse
gases which then
reradiate them in all
directions warming our
atmosphere.
