Settled in 1607 Funded by the Virginia Company, a joint stock company who expected the settlers to find silver and gold

The Early Years John Smith established friendly relationship with Native Americans It is only because more ships arrived with additional settlers that the settlement managed to survive. (Only 38 of the original 140 settlers survived the first year.)

TOBACCO Tobacco grew well here and was popular in Europe.
HEADRIGHT SYSTEM: used to attract more settlers. This system provided large amounts of land to anyone who could pay their own passage to the settlement.

TOBACCO This led to the establishment of large tobacco plantations and thus conflict with the Native Americans who did not believe in ownership of land. For labor, INDENTURED SERVANTS were given free passage to the settlement and in return had to work for their provider for a certain number of years (7-10)
