2 IBM Storwize Family delivers …
IBM Storwize Family delivers …. Three Core Principles for Infrastructure That Matters Store Less Data Improve What You Have Flash Optimized Set it and Forget it…. Award Winning Simplicity Start Small & Grow Big Whether for in house data storage or for the cloud, efficiency, ease of use and dependability are critical. Yesterday an easy answer to saving cost, looked to be storing on larger/cheaper drives. Whilst drives were double the capacity and half the price, every eighteen months, that may have looked equitable. But the reality is that wasn’t sufficient to contain costs associated with data growth. So, does moving some data to cheap cloud storage today, still fix tomorrows problem? Its essential to achieve a new level of data efficiency, both for applications that will remain onprem, as well as any data that is to be moved to the cloud, to ensure yesterday’s mistakes are not repeated tomorrow. Storwize delivers on these principals. Driving efficiency by reducing the amount of data being stored, and increasing utilisation, both of new as well as existing storage assets. Maximising the ROI from Flash, to ensure business SLA’s are met or exceeded, and the value outweighs the cost. Efficiency can not result in more complex environments. Storwize has award winning simplicity, driving “Set it and forget it” functional capabilities. The simplicity of implementation and deployment, enables full flexibility to buy only what you need today, and scale as data grows. This “start small, grow big” approach removes the need for a crystal ball to predict future storage requirements, that is necessary with other market solutions. Data is a business critical asset, it must be protected and available 24x7 to meeting customer requirements for service delivery. Leveraging the use of analytics, and based on a mature code base, of some 10 years, that had enterprise capability in its original design, Storwize is exceeding five 9’s availability in the field, so provides a dependable foundation for a data agenda, based on infrastructure that matters Embedded Analytics Proven Reliability Enterprise Capability

6 IBM Storwize Family is Efficient
Thin provisioning Recycle Waste Purchase only the storage you need when, you need it Dynamic growth Real-time compression Store Less Reduce data storage ingestion Flash Optimized With IBM Easy Tier® Perform Economically Meet & Exceed business Service Levels And Storwize delivers the efficiency features required to change the cost curve, So lets look at the key software features of Storwize, that drive to this new level of efficiency. I mentioned previously how Thin Provisioning ensures only the storage that is needed today, needs to be installed on the floor. But not all Thin Provisioning capabilities are the same. We need to help our clients understand the difference between “Ticking” this capability box, and a thin provisioning implementation that can be deployed without adversely impacting application performance. Storwize delivers Real time compression, changing the amount of data that needs to be stored. Easy Tier, on Storwize does more than tick the automated tierring capability box Active Cloud Engine, delivering easy, automated file management, through tiers or even to the cloud. We will look into these last three in more detail. Storwize ensures these efficiency capabilities actually deliver on their promise without compromise Without additional complexity Function availability varies by system

7 IBM Storwize Family is Resilient
High availability configurations Continuous Data Availability Highest levels of Data protection and availability Data Replication Data Protection Remote site replication options Application-aware copies Integrated Protection Virtually eliminate application downtime for backup Practice disaster recovery techniques Business Continuity Test Train staff & validate business continuity plans without disrupting applications This leads us nicely, to the resilience at the core of Storwize. Storwize can be configured in a very highly available, stretch cluster configuration. This can provide continuous data availability, across datacenters, for those customers, where losing access to data, equals significant economic impact. Data protection in a single site is no longer sufficient for organisations that truly understand that data is their most valuable asset. Loosing data can be the difference between staying in, or going out of business. IBM has very well proven replication capabilities, for both synchronous and asynchronous replication, depending on the distance between sites and the recovery point objectives. With application-aware, copies of data, utilising Flashcopy, particularly in combination with Flashcopy Manager, application downtime typically associated with backup, is essentially eliminated. With application aware copies, the application can control the backup, and the restore of data. With the ability to replicate data between datacenters, take Flashcopies on the remote site, disaster recovery techniques can be practiced, without impact or disruption the product systems. Again, for those customers where the economic impact of downtime is significant, being able train staff, validate business continuity plans, without disrupting production systems, is of significant value. Encrypt data at rest Protect From Disclosure Encrypt data to protect from indavertent disclosure and enable “secure erase” Function availability varies by system

9 IBM Storwize Family is Easy
“… managing an IBM Storwize [family] system with its management interface is 47 percent less time-consuming and 31 percent less complex than managing an EMC VNX system using the Unisphere software interface.” Creating new volumes: Simply select new volume preset Source: Edison Group, Competitive Management Cost Study: IBM Storwize V7000 vs. EMC VNX5500 Storage Systems

10 IBM Storage Mobile Dashboard
iPhone app provides monitoring and health checking for Storwize family systems Available free from Apple App Store As if Storwize wasn’t easy enough to manage, A storage mobile dashboard app is also available This allows monitoring of the performance and health of Storwize systems. One instance of the app can manage multiple systems. It can display used capacity, with the bar changing colour as capacity usage increases. Graphs can show recent latency or IOPS You can even view alerts for the systems and this can be filtered to show only specific alert types. So now customers can monitor their Storwize systems anywhere. They could be playing golf, out for dinner, or even in the back of a taxi, and still be able to check the status of their environment.

11 IBM Storwize Family is Fast Easy Tier – Automated Storage Tiering
IBM Easy Tier delivers… Analytics based Automated Storage Tiering Constantly analyzes I/O and migrates data to optimize performance Simple Efficiency Set it and forget it … unlike competitive tiering offerings Performance improvements up to 3x … using as little as 5% flash storage Flash Arrays Less Active Data Migrates Down Active Data Migrates Up The next efficiency feature of Storwize, is Easy Tier. Automated tiering is the next Strategy and Best Practice. And Moving data to the right place is an important Best Practice. Easy Tier automatically moves data to the right tier, keeping costs under control, while delivering the right performance levels for active data. quickly adjusting service levels to meet business requirements. Activating it really is simplicity itself. Efficiency without complexity. Easy Tier does this by leveraging the value of Flash storage, with minimal investment. In fact delivering, Up to 3x performance, with as little as 5% of the storage being Flash based. And its all automatic. The customer does not need to perform studies, track trends, look at historical performance statistics. Easy Tier uses embedded analytics, so you can set it and forget it. Inactive data is held in a lower tier, and consistent monitoring and analytics, ensure data is always in the right place. Easy Tier significantly improves the performance of new and existing applications, while lowering the cost per I/O And with this latest enhancement, now supports automated data movement between up to three tiers of storage, so can leverage the performance of Flash drives, the price/performance of SAS drives and lower cost per GB of NL SAS drives. Competitors either haven’t delivered this type of technology, or have chosen not to disclose their price/performance numbers. IBM, on the other hand, publishes benchmarks, including this audited, Storage Performance Council benchmark, to help clients understand the reality behind the marketing. HDD Arrays

17 IBM Storwize Family IP Replication
Reduce costs and improve disaster recovery Source Volume Destination TCP/IP Network Enables use of Ethernet connections for remote mirroring Transparent to servers and applications Includes Bridgeworks SANSlide network optimization technology No separate appliances required Uses artificial intelligence to improve network bandwidth utilization up to 3x Deploy less costly network infrastructure Speed replication cycles for better remote data currency and faster recovery Can optionally utilize compression One of the most important new functios in Storwize family is IP replication, which enables the use of lower cost ethernet connections for remote mirroring. The capability is available as a chargeable option on all Storwize family systems. The new function is transparent to servers and applications (they have no idea it is being used) in the same way that traditional FC-based mirroring is. All remote mirroring modes (metro mirror, gloal mirror, and global mirror with changed volumes) are supported although it is expected that GM with CV will be the preferred option. Configuration of the system is straightforward: Storwize family systems will normally find each other on the network and can be selected from the GUI. IP replication includes Bridgeworks SANrockIT network optimization technology and is available at no additional charge. That is to say, remote mirror is a chargeable option but the price doesn’t change with IP replication. Existing remote mirror users have access to the new function at no additional charge.
