8 Strategic Plan: Research
Expand our scholarship, creative endeavors, and research across the full range of disciplines to focus on the most important challenges of the Commonwealth, our nation, and the world.

9 Strategic Plan: Research
Invest in UK's existing strengths and areas of growth in selected focus areas that benefit and enrich the lives of the citizens of the Commonwealth and beyond. Recruit and retain outstanding faculty, staff and students that support our research and scholarship across the range of disciplines at the University. Improve the quality of the research infrastructure across campus. Strengthen engagement efforts and translation of research and creative work for the benefit of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, the nation and the world.

10 Research Support Units: Use them
Research Support Units: Use them! Office of Sponsored Projects Administration (OSPA) Director = Kim Carter. What does this office have to do with me? Your COM pre-award office will assist you in preparing budgets, proposal packages. All grants from UK ultimately have to be submitted/approved through OSPA; your College has its assigned officers within OSPA. OSPA oversees all grants and contract administration, compliance with fiscal agency policy. Electronic Internal Approval Form (eIAF): What is this? This form outlines your grant from participants, to agency, to use within our database (for searching for similar areas to assist you, to defining your budget and share of F&A costs eIAF must be submitted to OSPA 3 business days prior to sponsor’s published deadline. Your college has its own deadline perhaps as well.

11 Research Support Units: Use them! Office of Research Integrity (ORI)
Interim Director = Helene Lake-Bullock. What does this office have to do with me? Animal Care and Use (IACUC): review and approval of all research involving animals. Institutional Review Board for Human Research: review and approval of all human subjects research. Research Integrity Issues: an unfortunate reality these days.

12 Research Support Units: Use them! Proposal Development Office (PDO)
Director: Margot McCullers What does this office have to do with me? They can link you to grant funding opportunities They provide grantsmanship experience (don’t discount the importance of this) They provide editorial assistance on grants They maintain templates of institutional information related to grant applications (resources, tables, etc). They have some examples of successful grant applications. They send out notices of grant opportunities (sign up with your expertise) We are currently revamping this office to have agency-specific experts (e.g., NIH experts).

13 What is this and how does it affect me?
Research Support Units: Use them! Intellectual Property/Technology Transfer (IP/TTO) Director = Ian McClure What is this and how does it affect me? If you have ideas that have applications or economic implications (e.g., new drug, device), file an online disclosure and go through our process to determine patentability. Once you publish a novel finding in the public domain, it is out there and too late to patent

14 Research Core Facilities
Associate VPR for Research Core Facilities = Alan Daugherty Why would I need to know about Research Cores? Cores have equipment that you cannot typically afford through your individual start-up package (and can thus save you money for use in your lab) Cores have experts to run the equipment, methods development Cores facilitate your grant applications (resources section) There are 9 Service Cores that are managed centrally under the VPR, many more college-specific cores Cores that may relate to your research: All of them!!! Most cores have user fees, but there are some funds available for new investigators as first time core users

15 University Research Centers
Associate VPR = Allan Butterfield What do I care about Centers? Centers cross college/unit boundaries, so they network you Centers enhance/augment your individual research program Centers have seminar programs, research days, etc to enrich your program Centers can strength the Resources/Facilities section of your grants 13 Centers under the VPR, health care related units = Markey Cancer Center, Health Services Research Center, Center for Clinical and Translational Sciences (CCTS). Other ones of potential interest to you: Computational Sciences, Membrane Sciences, Structural Biology, Human Development Institute

16 New Research Facilities: Academic Science Building, Research Building 2
Arts and Sciences: Part lecture, part labs RB2, under construction, health disparities focus

17 VPR offerings that may help you
Research Support Grants: offered once/year (but start-up package may make you ineligible) Equipment Maintenance Program Conference/Workshop Grants University Research Professorships Diversity Postdoctoral Fellowships Wyatt Traveling Fellowship (environmental research) Support of various pilot programs across campus (MVP, COBREs, etc)

18 Welcome to Research at UK COM!
We will also hold a new faculty orientation if you are interested, Staff Directors will be in attendance manning tables. Contact me at: You are in good hands
