4 MANUFACTURING A manufacturing process – several manufacturers are a part of the total activity needed to produce goods that are purchased by consumers Types of manufacturing procedures Mass production – assembly process that makes a large number of identical products using a continuous efficient procedure (What did Ford do to contribute to mass production?) Custom manufacturing – building a specific and unique product to meet the needs of each customer Materials processing – changing the form of raw materials so they can be consumed or used to make other products

5 Checkpoint  What is the difference between custom manufacturing and materials processing?

6 Answer to Check point Custom manufacturing is building a unique product to meet the needs of one customer. Materials processing is changing the form of raw materials so they can be used to make other products. Custom manufacturing involves a smaller amount of materials; materials processing involves larger quantities.

7 Assignment How Products Are Made explains and details the manufacturing process of a wide variety of products, from daily household items to complicated electronic equipment and heavy machinery. You may work alone or with a partner: pick one product and create a PowerPoint or Google Slides presentation describing the steps (in your own words do not copy from web site) starting from raw material to the finished products for consumers or businesses to use You will present to the class
