Dissolving – Creating Solutions
Solute – the substance in the smallest amount and the one that dissolves. Solvent – the substance in the larger amount; water is the most common in nature. Dissolve – refers to when the solute “passes” into a solution. In dissolving, the solute goes through a physical change – the pieces of the solute (sugar for example) become smaller, but remain the same substance. Solution – type of mixture in which 2 or more substances are evenly spread out and mixed together; this results in one substance dissolving into another.

What if we place two different colored M&M’s in the plate (on opposite sides); will the dyes mix or stay separate? Prediction (hypothesis)? 1. Write a question for this observation activity. 2. Observe the two different M&M’s for 3 minutes – record what happens to the dye.

How can we get the dyes to mix? Ideas?
Testable Question: Will the temperature of the water affect whether the dyes mix or stay separate? We will test 3 temperatures: room, warm, hot What is the independent variable? What is the dependent variable? What is the control group? What are the experimental groups? List 3 constants.

Divide the class into two groups; each group will observe the following:
Room Temp Water Warm Water Hot Water 2 diff. colored M&M’s Same 2 colors your observations go here – do NOT put a line below this row! After 3 minutes, record your observation of whether the dyes mixed or remained separate in each plate. Set up notebook: copy the table (use the lines on the paper)

Report your results: Write the following in a paragraph (typed preferred): The testable question Your hypothesis Results – explain what happened Explanation of the results (molecular motion) – complete the reading before writing this part. This is collected and graded – due Thursday
