The WOWBug and the Blackworm
Lessons 2 and 3 Notes The WOWBug and the Blackworm
2
The Compound Microscope
The compound light microscope has 3 objective lenses that magnify the specimen being viewed. Low = 40x magnification Medium = 100x magnification High = 400x magnification
3
At different magnifications, the field of view changes size.
For example, as the magnification gets higher, the field of view gets smaller and vice versa. Some of you may have viewed the WOWBugs grooming themselves to remove the flour. Organisms groom to maintain their bodies in prime condition.
4
Anatomy Terms Anterior – toward the front, or head.
Dorsal – upperside or back of an organism. Ventral – underside of an organism; abdomen Posterior – toward the back end.
5
The blackworm does not have a heart, it has only one blood vessel that pulsates to carry blood throughout its body. Pulses are controlled by muscular contractions that begin at the posterior end of the worm. The pulsation rate depends where on the worm the measurements are made and the temperature of the worm.
