17 What is the Russell Group?
Formed in 1994 at a meeting convened in Russell Square. An association of 24 major research intensive universities committed to maintaining the highest standards of research, education and knowledge transfer. The purpose of The Russell Group is to provide strong leadership and strategic direction for its members. Representing just 12% of the higher education sector, the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise found that over 60% of the UK’s very best (‘world leading’) research took place in Russell Group universities.

Business Studies Essential: none Useful: Maths, Business Studies (AGCE, National and Diploma) and Economics Engineering (general) Essential: Maths and Physics Useful: Further Maths, Design Technology Biology Essential: Biology, Chemistry Useful: Maths or Physics Dentistry Essential: Chemistry and Biology for most courses, but some require Maths or Physics as well. Useful: Maths, Physics, Further Maths Medicine Essential: if you do Chemistry, Biology and one from Maths or Physics you will keep all the medical schools open to you. If you do Chemistry and Biology you will keep open the vast majority. If you do Chemistry and one from Maths and Physics you will limit your range of choices much more. Useful: Further Maths or a contrasting (non-science) subject English Essential: English Literature or combined English Language and Literature (some courses will accept English language) Useful: History, RS, a Foreign Language

22 Apprenticeship overview
Apprenticeships combine practical training in a job with study. As an apprentice you’ll: work alongside experienced staff gain job-specific skills earn a wage and get holiday pay get time for study related to your role (usually one day a week) Apprenticeships take 1 to 5 years to complete depending on their level

23 Levels of apprenticeship
Traineeship: Level 1 or Level 2 (equivalent to GCSEs or below). Unpaid but you gain skills and qualifications. Intermediate: Level 2 (equivalent to GCSEs). Advanced: Level 3 (equivalent to A-levels). Higher: Level 4 and above (equivalent to Foundation degree and higher). School Leaver Programme: Some large employers run their own bespoke training programme which recruit school leavers. These employers include KPMG and PwC. Degree apprenticeship: As well as working on the job, you study for a degree. You earn from day one and your tuition fees are paid by the employer. There are over 280 types of apprenticeship available, suitable for hundreds of different job roles in approximately 170 different industries. From social media to sea fishing, horticulture to hairdressing, business administration to electrical engineering, there's something to suit everyone
