Organized Organelles Now that you’ve reviewed the organelles, let’s get them organized! SUBSTITUTION Technology acts a direct substitute, with no functional improvement After watching the EDPuzzle video, get a laptop and log on if you used an iPad. Open Microsoft Word. Use the SmartArt feature under the Insert tab to create three different concept maps: The first concept map should include all of the organelles in an animal cell and their functions. The second concept map should include all of the organelles in a plant cell and their functions. The third concept map should compare animal and plant cells. After you have completed all three concept maps, submit them in Blackboard. Log off of the laptop when you are done and return it to the assigned location. Let’s review the cell organelles you learned about in Biology I! AUGMENTATION Technology acts as a direct tool for substitution with some functional improvement. Get an internet accessible device. You may use either an iPad or a laptop for this assignment. Warning: You will have to type some, so grab a laptop if you don’t like typing on the iPads. Log in to EDpuzzle using YOUR assigned username and password. There are two videos for you to watch in Biology II. They need to be watched in the following order: Animal Cell Plant Cell All questions embedded with the videos must be answered for you to get full credit for this assignment. Log out of EDpuzzle when you are done. M Wikinelles You think you know the organelles now? Let’ see what you know! MODIFICATION Technology allows for significant task redesign. Get your assigned organelle from Ms. Dupuis. Get a laptop, log on to the laptop, and log on to Blackboard. Under the Biology II tab, you will find a link to the Organelles Wiki. Once in the wiki, create a page by clicking “Create Wiki Page” in the top left corner. The title of your wiki page must be the name of your assigned organelle. In the Content box, write a short essay that includes the following information: Name of the Organelle Origin of the organelle’s name When was the organelle first discovered? Who discovered it? Describe the appearance of an organelle. We will work on adding images later. What is the function of the organelle? How does it carry out this function? Does your organelle work in conjunction with other organelles? If so, which organelles? Include all of your sources and proper in-text citations in MLA formatting. Click submit when you are done. Log off of the laptop and return it to its assigned location. In larger classes, students could work in pairs to write the wiki articles. You may want to have students write the essay portion in Mircosoft Word or other word processing software prior to creating the wiki page. *Teachers will have to have taken Bb 201 to create wikis. R You’re the Editor Now we’ve made a wiki. But before we can share it, we have to make sure it’s ready to be shared! Get a laptop, log on to the laptop, and log on to Blackboard. Go to the Organelles Wiki. Find your assigned organelle’s page Check the content of the page for correct spelling and grammar. Fact-check the following information (track changes on a piece of paper for now): Name of the Organelle Origin of the organelle’s name When was the organelle first discovered? Who discovered it? Describe the appearance of an organelle. We will work on adding images later. What is the function of the organelle? How does it carry out this function? Does your organelle work in conjunction with other organelles? If so, which organelles? Include all of your sources and proper in-text citations in MLA formatting. Click “Edit Wiki Content” and make your changes. You must find changes to make, you may improve their writing or add additional information. Click submit when you are done. Log off of the laptop and return it to its assigned location. Now the wiki is ready! We’ll be sharing it with the Biology I class in the upcoming weeks.
