2 Class etiquette – possible consequences
You have a responsibility to not be disruptive or prevent other students from learning LATE Don’t expect the tutor or other students to help you catch up or find your place or go back over material RINGING CELLPHONE/TEXTING/NOISE FROM DEVICES You may be asked to leave the class for 15 minutes If it happens again you may be asked to leave for the rest of the class TALKING TO NEIGHBOURS WHEN THE TUTOR IS PRESENTING – Asked to sit on own away from other people Asked to leave the class for 15 minutes Asked to leave for the rest of the class NOT CONTRIBUTING TO GROUP ACTIVITIES Don’t expect other students to carry you. You will end up being asked to do all the work on your own.

3 Introduction Learning methods
We will spend as much time as possible using all of these methods. The lecture will be just introducing WHAT we are learning about. You will Read the text book, watch videos, take part in class discussions and practice doing in labs and on assignments. If you want to really learn then take the opportunity to teach your peers who need extra help.

Weekly lecture – presentation of material Weekly lab – preparation for assignments Self-directed study Moodle – readings and videos Text book – approximately 1 chapter a week Internet research Library books Study groups Assignments

5 Introduction Learning is work
Your brain is a muscle, you have to exercise it – like going to the gym. Your tutor cannot inject knowledge into your brain, you have to do the work

6 Introduction Self-directed learning
You need to take responsibility for your own learning – your tutor is your guide to what to learn.

7 Introduction If you are going to miss a class
your tutor BEFORE the class if you are unwell Look on Moodle and work through the learning material for the class you have missed. This class will not be repeated. Continue working on your assignment(s) You need to take responsibility for your own learning – your tutor is your guide to what to learn.

8 Introduction If you are struggling
your tutor or talk to your tutor in Lab time Make an appointment with Student Learning Services to talk to a Learning Advisor Make use of Wintec’s free counselling service Form a study group with some of your classmates Use the Moodle forums to ask questions, discuss content (use it like a dedicated facebook group) You need to take responsibility for your own learning – your tutor is your guide to what to learn.
