General Safety Rules 1. Listen to or read instructions carefully before attempting to do anything. If in doubt ask your teacher. 2. Tie long hair back, remove dangling jewelry, roll up loose sleeves, and tuck in loose clothing during all experiments. 3. Keep area neat. Put ALL materials except those you need in your desk or storage area.

General Safety Rules 4. Do not carry too many objects at once. Make several trips. 5. Do not leave your experiment/lab unattended. 6. No horsing around or running in the lab. 7. Never return unused chemicals to their original container.

General Safety Rules 8. Use goggles when heating with a hotplate or when directed. 9. Do not touch HOT materials unless protective gloves are worn. 10. Do not touch broken glass. Notify the teacher for proper disposal.

General Safety Rules 11. Report ALL accidents/injuries (NO MATTER HOW SLIGHT) to the teacher. 12. Make sure you know where the fire blanket, fire extinguisher, exit, emergency eye wash and shower are in case of an emergency.

General Safety Rules 13. Do not taste any substances used in an experiment/lab unless directed to do so. 14. No food and/or beverages are permitted in any science laboratory or storage area.

General Safety Rules 15. Do not touch your eyes, mouth or face when working with chemicals. 16. Put ALL equipment back where you got them from at the end of an experiment/lab.

General Safety Rules 17. Be sure to clean and dry your lab area thoroughly after the lab is completed. 18. Wash your hands thoroughly after each activity.

General Safety Rules Everyone should recognize and heed all safety symbols and cautions incorporated into procedures of the laboratory experiments.

Glassware Safety 1. Chipped or cracked glassware should not be used. Show it to the teacher. 2. Broken glassware should not be disposed of in a classroom trashcan. There is a special glass disposal container for it. 3. When pouring liquids into glassware, make sure the container you are pouring into is resting on a table at least a hands breadth from the edge.

Glassware Safety 4. If a piece of glassware gets broken, do not try to clean it up by yourself. Notify the teacher. 5. Do not place hot glassware in water. Rapid cooling may make it shatter.

Chemical Safety 1. Wear protective goggles whenever heating or pouring hazardous chemicals. 2. Never mix chemicals together unless you are told to do so (and then only in the manner specified).

Chemical Safety 3. If you need to smell the odor of a chemical, waft the fumes toward your nose with one hand. Do not put your nose over the container and inhale the fumes.

Chemical Safety 4. Follow the instructions of your teacher when disposing of all chemicals. Flammables should not be poured down the laboratory sink drain. 5. Wash your hands after handling hazardous chemicals.

Chemical Safety 6. Do not add water to acid. Remember AAA (like the battery size) – Always Add Acid to water. 7. Never chew gum, apply cosmetics (this includes ChapStick!) or put anything in your mouth (including your fingers and pencils/pens) in the laboratory.

Heating Safety 1. Use tongs, Hot Hands and/or protective gloves to handle hot objects. Never reach across an open flame, hot plate or burner. 3. Always point the top ends of test tubes that are being heated away from people.

Heating Safety 4. Extreme caution should be exercised when using a burner or hot plate. Keep your head and clothing away from the burner/hot plate and turn off when not in use. Check to see that all hot plates are turned off before leaving the laboratory.

Heating Safety 5. Only glassware that is thoroughly dry should be heated. 6. Heat glassware by placing it on a wire gauze platform on a ringstand. Do not hold it in your hand.

First Aid Injury: Burns
To Do: Immediately flush with cold water until burning sensation is lessened. Go to the nurse.

First Aid Injury: The eyes
To Do: Flush eyes immediately with plenty of water for several minutes. If a foreign object is lodged in the eye, do not rub the eye. Go to the nurse.
