Growth measure data can be used to examine the added value that our teachers give to students above the knowledge they bring to their classroom. How do we measure student growth. Well we measure student growth by asking 3 questions: What difference am I making as a teacher? What practices will help me get the most gain out of my students? And what resources or programs will help me get the most gain? Backing up, look at Battelle, they say 2 different things in their set up for value-added. One of them is to incorporate the right processes. One first one is to establish the right conditions for staff and students. Background of PD training and prep EQ and SEL – Dig in the “other kind of smart” know as emotional intelligence or EQ or EI Kelli Tebbe & Tommy Renfro Ohio Improvement Institute November 2016

2 …more aware …more intentional …and more purposeful?
What would happen if people had learnable, measurable, scientifically grounded skills to be… …more aware …more intentional …and more purposeful? I am here to share with you what maybe of you already know…the truth of about school. The Main event, what many call the “missing link” is not what is the focus in many schools. Academics are not the main event of the school. The main event of school is learning how to deal with the harshness of life. From a forgotten locker combination to losing a loved one and through it all knowing how to be the best version of themselves! The main event is having relicense through adversity. The main event is choosing to take charge of weaknesses, boredom, and having the willingness to take on challenges. The main is event is delaying temptation and taking the time to invest in understanding emotions and learning that short term pain can lead to long term gain. The main event is not letting judgement be tainted by emotion and have the grace and tack when you want to hit, scream, or run away. The main event is pulling yourself together to make hard choices and find hope in the hopeless. The main event is knowing how to courage up and become the best you possible! (Which includes academic as well as other personal successes) That is my challenge for you today…Courage up and find a way to bring this into your districts to create a culture in which this becomes a reality.

3 Defining “Emotional Intelligence”
Emotional Intelligence & Success Defining “Emotional Intelligence” Being smarter with feelings. How? Be more aware. Be more intentional. Be more purposeful. So what is EQ/SEL… Our EQ is our ability to recognize emotions, to understand how emotions impact our decisions, provide us with information to guide our thinking and behavior. In short EQ is being smarter with feelings. Neuroscience has confirmed what many educators have always known…learning is social and the key to SEL lies within relationships. ……. ©Six Seconds

4 www.6seconds.org Emotional Intelligence & Success
And that is shown here… Strong relationship between EQ/SEL and performance. We all know that emotions drive people and people drive performance. We have all experienced that flood of emotions and/or witnessed someone else react instead of respond to a situation… [Regression analysis finds a very strong, predictive relationship between emotional intelligence and these success factors (see page 4 of the White Paper for more)] ©Six Seconds

5 How can we find success if we do not have emotional intelligence?

6 EQ Certification Day 1Day 1
EQ Cert L1 Why does this happen? EQ is the capacity to blend thinking and feeling to make optimal decisions – which is the key to having successful relationship with yourself and others Your thinking and feeling brain Recent science is showing otherwise. The two are intertwined. How many of you made any kind of decisions today? Then you used your emotions. Every decision is made with emotions. Our rational intelligence may make the cognitive decision, but our emotional intelligence judges it. Emotion and cognition is an inseparable neuroscience. Simply put our feelings are what we name our emotions from outside stimulus. This causes us to have a pattern of behavior that could either be a reaction or response. To be emotionally intelligent we need to be smart about feelings - to blend our thinking and feeling. ©Six Seconds©Six Seconds ©Six Seconds

7 Theses areas are called competencies
Theses areas are called competencies. Like apps in a computer, these competencies are essential to your emotional intelligence. These are capabilities your brain has to help you make decisions, relate with others, perform under stress. In other words…What does your brain like to do? What functions are easy and smooth for your brain and used as assets? What capabilities are there opportunities for growth? Remember emotions drive people and people drive performance. What is driving you? There are 18 competencies that your brain has the ability to use. You have them all. Hand out cards with groups. Explain as a group they need to look through all 18 cards and as a group discuss what are the top 3 competencies an administrator should have. As they look through mark on their paper stars for possible strengths and checks for possible weak areas.

8 Why?

9 Part of EQ is balance. (Show page with Brain Talents and the lines)
Look at the apps you selected. Is there balance? Why or why not? Discuss and why if make any changes?

10

11 Discuss: What if the competencies selected do not fall in your area of strength? What if they do fall in your area of strength? Do you agree with the report? Why or Why not? How can you use your strengths to compensate for your lower areas?

12 Our behaviors and accomplishments are the things they other people can see. This knowledge and experiences help us get places. While academics and achievements are necessary, they are not what make us successful. As we all know the mass that lies under the water is much larger than what you can see on top. These are the things that make up who we are, why we do things, and how we approach situations and problems. This is what drives how we behave and spells the difference between those who excel and those who underachieve. This is how people with similar intellect can have very different levels of success in their professional and personal lives. The skills that lie underneath are what drive us towards success or failure.

13 How is emotional intelligence developed?
3 focus areas:

14 Know yourself Enhance Emotional Literacy & Recognize Patterns
Plutchik’s Emotional Map Awareness is the key to change… Enhance emotional literacy – name our feelings – name it we tame it but do we have the words to name it. Activity: find synonyms for emotion words; journal daily focusing on feeling words; plot/graph feeling words on a graph/grid based on intensity and/or positive/negative; feelings mash pit when everyone ID a feeling face and tells why, etc. ; go to: Recognizing Patterns – stop and think We are creatures of habit and spend most of our day on auto-pilot which does not allow for change. We need to Recognize patterns in order to change them. Emotions are data and can help us optimize our behavior if used properly. Enhance Emotional Literacy & Recognize Patterns

15 Consequential Thinking
Choose Yourself Consequential Thinking Navigating Emotions Intrinsic Motivation Optimism When a situation starts to heat up, “press the pause button”. Take a big breath. Get some water. Say “let me think about this for a moment”. There are very few situations that actually require an instant reaction. Remember you have many options. Sometimes it’s hard to see those. You can change your thought, engage new feelings, experience with new actions. You might not how the “perfect solution”, but you do have possibilities! Pause to evaluate the data from “know yourself”. Requires a delicate balance of self-discipline and self-acceptance – being our real selves honestly and also being better each day

16 The size of your carbon footprint? How you get along with colleagues?
You may not always have a choice in what or how things happen, but you can choose how you will respond!!!! The size of your carbon footprint? How you get along with colleagues? How you respond to an ? Whether you can forgive a conflict? What you have for breakfast? Whether you catch a cold or not? Completely my choice Human Graph – how much choice do you have with a set of questions? -What areas of life you do have more choice? Less choice? Why might this be? -Do you have choice where you want choice? If not why? -If you have a choice do you make decisions? -If you have a choice, how do you choose? You may not always have a choice in what or how things happen, but you can choose how you will respond!!!! I have no choice

17 Give yourself Develop Empathy & Pursue Noble Goals www.6seconds.org
Neuroscience has proven what many educators have always known and that is learning is social. We are wired to be social and to connect…that is why empathy is critical to being emotionally intelligent. Mirror neurons let us understand the actions, intentions, and feelings of others. They fire when we perform an action such as grabbing an apple and fire the same when we see others doing the same thing. Mirror neurons also fire when we experience an emotion as well as when we see others experiencing an emotion. This allows for empathy. We do not need to “think” about the other person being sad, we actually experience it first hand. This is all done through social interaction and facial expressions. Administrators, teachers, students, etc. need to take responsibility for their own actions and choices because in a social environment we are continually mirroring each other’s emotions. Simply showing up with more ideal behavior and an intentional emotional state is an important part of teaching others this skill. Develop Empathy & Pursue Noble Goals

18 How many days a week are extraordinary for you?
Do you be who you are? Do you do what you need to do? Do you have what you need to give? A noble is goal is how we live our lives on a daily basis. It is the idea that we base our thoughts, feelings, and actions on. To truly know what is important and provide focus and build internal drive in what we do everyday. It’s not enough to be smart, we need a powerful blend of ethics + compassion + commitment.  We need to put our principles into action.”   Pursue Noble Goals

19 1. Emotions are real and they affect us
1. Emotions are real and they affect us. They affect how we respond, they shape the decisions we make. 2. You have a choice. Maybe not total freedom, but options in how to respond. 3. Your choices matter. Every decision, every interaction, affects ourselves, and others, and ultimately the world. What makes these three ideas transformational is that they are a PROCESS.  As we go through these three steps, we bring our emotional intelligence forward to make better decisions, to take action that’s aligned with our real goals.  Or, in Anabel’s words, to put our principles into action.

20 How can you use emotional intelligence to make you a stronger leader?
How could it impact your district? Teachers? Students? Community? Think pair share about how we can use this in your setting as an educator? What are your ideas? Share out your ideas.

21 Remember it starts with you! What will you do?
How will you courage up and take on this challenge? How will you bring awareness back to your district? Why have past efforts not helped? What can be different this time? Remember it starts with you! Establishing the right conditions for staff and students is the foundation to increase VA Scores. Share PD options. Remember it starts with you! What will you do?
