We use reporting verbs in dialogues when we report what the characters said in a story.
Reporting verbs can be put before or after the subject, e.g.
Rapunzel said, ‘Your teeth are black.’
‘Your teeth are black,’ said Rapunzel.

When the character is asking a question:
Rapunzel asked, ‘How often do you brush your teeth?’
