1 “Lines Composed a Few Miles above Tintern Abbey, On Revisiting the Banks of the Wye during a Tour. July 13, 1798” William Wordsworth

2 Homework You were to read Wordsworth’s poem and answer the following questions: 1. How does the poet feel when he revisits the banks of the Wye? 2. What gifts does he receive from Nature? 3. What does the poet mean by the use of the word “sublime”? 4. How does Nature serve the poet?

3 Discuss Share your answers to the questions with the person sitting next to you. Pair up with another group and discuss again. Choose one piece of insight to share with the class.

4 Connect to Frankenstein
This poem is quoted in chapter 1 of volume 3 “…The sounding cataract Haunted me like a passion: the tall rock, The mountain, and the deep and gloomy wood, Their colours and their forms, were then to me An appetite; a feeling and a love, That had no need of a remoter charm, By thought supplied, not any interest Unborrowed from the eye…” Why would Shelley choose to use this excerpt? What is happening in the novel at this time?

5 Connect to Frankenstein
The translation on your worksheet uses the pronoun “me” whereas in the novel, the pronoun used is “him” Why would Shelley adapt the poem in such a way? If the pronoun “me” had been used in the novel, how can we relate this poem to Victor? What type of thematic tie can we make between this poem and Frankenstein? Thematic tie: Nature and man’s relation to it – kids could go several directions with this – let them explore.
