1
Evolution of Globalisation
Lesson Aims: To understand the key events which have led to the development of globalisation.
2
Getting Connected and disconnected
1492, Columbus first lands in America and establishes European Control. New patterns of trade and development are established that shape global economy. Today’s global patterns of wealth are still largely shaped by these early trading links. European countries become wealthy by trading with their new colonies. At the same time flow of wealth from the colonies prevents them from developing as much as their colonisers , making them economically disconnected. Page 70

Core and Periphery Page 71 Define ‘The Core’ Define ‘The Periphery’
On the handout decide whether the statements are more applicable to the core of the periphery. Page 71
4
Core or Periphery? Key: C = Core P = Periphery
Makes most decisions about the global economy e.g. what goods are produced Owns and consumes 80% of global goods and services Owns and consumes 20% of global goods and services. Today, new global connections add flows of finished and semi finished products from these countries to the traditional flows of commodities and raw materials We have 75% of the world’s population Core or Periphery? Earn low incomes – 2.5 billion people live on less than $2 per day Makes very few decisions about the global economy Manufacturing has risen here because we offer cheaper labour Earns the highest incomes Provides very little global investment Manufacturing has fallen here but we profit because we dictate to the new production lines Provides most global investment Key: C = Core P = Periphery
5
Recent Global shifts Page 71
Explain how recent global shifts have had an impact on the core and the periphery. H/W – Read the hand out on the causes of regional inequalities. Produce a report (minimum of 2 pages plus maps/diagrams) of case study examples to help support the recent global shifts that you have identified above. Hand in Tuesday 24th February) Page 71

Getting More connected: is the World shrinking?
Explain the key influences on globalisation through history These influences include improved communication links and transport. In pairs /threes produce a diagram to show how these influences have evolved over time. (use both text books to help – page 68 (Fish) and page 91 Globe) Page 91
