Enhancing student learning through the use of iPads for teaching Ruth Gill and Anni Hollings 7/7/16

Aims: Increase student participation in learning Transforming teaching practice Raise attainment and increase employability prospects How? Range of internal training events Flipped classroom Tutor as facilitator Started in November

3 Why ipad? Observed in practice with sixth form students
Recommended by tutors/teachers World renowned product

4 Transforming teaching and learning
60 ipads purchased 30 hdmi connectors for device portability 4 Apple training days (January to June) Learning Technologist training sessions NearPod training by internal academic L Tech – group and one to one training

5 strengths Responsive, credible technology Portability Adjustable for inclusivity Not expensive Creates learning communities in class using technology No where to hide!

6 Weaknesses Apple product – ‘buy in’ Not always compatible Connectivity difficult in large groups Need external trainers Not everyone has an iPad Different generation iPads have a different visual experience for the user

General introduction to ipad including camera work, ibooks, iTunesU Specific Apps including: dvPrompter, Showbie, iMovie, Chatterkid, Tellgami, Spark Video

10 So What Now? Investment – staff time and resources Staff development – creating Digital Faculty Champions Student feedback – capturing the learning and engagement for analysis University Commitment – wider IT developments to incorporate a range of technology
