Mood, Tone, Imagery, Theme
2
MOOD MOOD is the overall feelings or emotions that are created IN THE READER. Authors “move” their readers’ moods through their choice of words and level of detail.
3
TONE TONE is simply the author’s attitude toward the subject.
You can recognize the tone/attitude by the language/word choices the author uses. Tone must be inferred through the use of descriptive words.
4
Imagery An image is language that describes something that can be seen, heard, touched, tasted, or smelled.
5
Theme This is what the poem is all about.
The theme of the poem is the central idea that the poet wants to convey. It can be a story, or a thought, or a description of something or someone - anything which is what the poem is all about.
