5 AUTONOMY "It can hardly be expected that we shall put 400,000 or 500,000 men in the field and willingly accept the position of having no more voice and receiving no more consideration than if we were toy automata." -Sir Robert Borden, January 4, 1916 Basically;  The Borden quote is about how if we send troops over, we should have a say in controlling them.  The Daily Colonist (June 1919)

9 Women's Rights Sat July 27. Dear Mrs Archer.
Just a line to thank you, as Red Cross Sec. for the Alliance, for the socks which were sent to me through Mother. They were very acceptable and most comfortable too. We can always use plenty of them There is littel news I can give you. We are kept fairly busy but not worked too hard. Weather has been pretty decent so far although it has rained for the last couple of days. Too bad about Allan Hutchson was so unfortunate. If he makes the grade allright it will be a wonderful experience. News is certainly encouraging these days when we get any. We live on rumours out here and only occasionally do we get authentic reports. Please thank the Red Cross branch for me and also many thanks to yourself. With best wishes Sincerely Wilfred Campbell. 10 Hoping you have a successful New Year.
December 20, 1917 Dear Madam, I am sorry that owing to my long absence from dear old Toronto, I do not know who the president of the Woman's Alliance is, but I am sure that you will convey my thoughts to the ladies of the Alliance in remembering me at Christmas time and will thank them for the splendid box they sent. It arrived in fine shape and I think the corncob pipe was probably the most precious article in the box for you can't get them in France. I am having a fine time but have not seen anybody from the church. Hoping you have a successful New Year. I am Yours sincerely Allen G. Hutcheon 21st R.S.A.

11 “The exclusion of women from all public offices is a relic of days more barbarous than ours.  And to those who would ask why the word “person” should include females, the obvious answer is, why should it not?”
