1 An Alternative Mosquito Repellent Using Local Organic Material
2. An Alternative Mosquito Repellent Using Local Organic Material Aquinas Brenda Crispin and Beatrice Crispin Abstract: This project explains on how to prepare the alternative mosquito repellent using local organic materials which are Eucalyptus leaves, sunflower oil and lemon grass. The project is done in order to show that the eucalyptus trees are not only used for lumbering activities but also can be usable in project like manufacture mosquito repellent. This project has undergone experimental evidence done during night studies. The repellent can be used to prevent the spread of malaria and has no effect to the human body. The project has been researched and has scientific evidence that can make it applicable in everyday’s life. Method: During the preparation of organic mosquito repellent the following materials were used Eucalyptus leaves Lemon grass Sunflower oil-1 litre Stainsteel kettle-2 (double boiling) Filters Pestle and mortar Measure 3 grams of eucalyptus leaves and 1 liter of sunflower oil. Grind the eucalyptus leaves and the lemon grass separately. Pour sunflower oil into the stain steel kettle, add the grinded eucalyptus leaves and lemon grass mix it and let it stay overnight (12 hours) Pour water into the stain steel kettle and boil it until it steams Then put in the stain steel kettle containing the mixture of sunflower oil grinded eucalyptus leaves and lemon grass their after do double boiling and cover both stain steel kettles with a lid for about 45 minutes. Stair the mixture using repellent a wooden ladle filter it to remove the residue and to obtain a fine product. Let it cool, pack it into the containers, label the mosquito repellent if necessary and ready for uses. Results: There after the mosquito repellent is tested to observer its efficiency in killing the mosquitoes and controlling the mosquito bites as shown below. Conclusion: The reasons to make the mosquito repellent is to promote the scientific innovations of preventing malaria by using local available organic materials and to sensitize transformation of scientific theory into practice The organic mosquito repellent is very effective materials used are cheaply available and no side effects for users.
