1 Sedimentary Basin Types
Examples

2 Geologic provinces & common rock types
This map shows the distribution of major rock types on the surface of the earth Among the notable aspects of this distribution is the fact that continental cores (shields) are underlain by very old rocks, compared to continental margins, which are typically underlain by young rocks. Note the distribution of volcanoes, and by inference batholiths, around the Pacific Ocean, where oceanic crust is subducting beneath shallower plates.

3 Geologic provinces & common rock types
Rift basins (commonly hidden beneath passive margins) This map shows the distribution of major rock types on the surface of the earth Among the notable aspects of this distribution is the fact that continental cores (shields) are underlain by very old rocks, compared to continental margins, which are typically underlain by young rocks. Note the distribution of volcanoes, and by inference batholiths, around the Pacific Ocean, where oceanic crust is subducting beneath shallower plates.

4 Passive margin sedimentary basins
(Rift basins typically reside beneath Miogeocline, where crust has been thinned)

5 Rift basin sedimentary assemblage
(New Jersey example)

6 Geologic provinces & common rock types
Foreland basins This map shows the distribution of major rock types on the surface of the earth Among the notable aspects of this distribution is the fact that continental cores (shields) are underlain by very old rocks, compared to continental margins, which are typically underlain by young rocks. Note the distribution of volcanoes, and by inference batholiths, around the Pacific Ocean, where oceanic crust is subducting beneath shallower plates.

7 Foreland basin sedimentary assemblage
(Utah example)

8 Other basin types (not witnessed in Dillon)
Forearc basins Transform margin basins This map shows the distribution of major rock types on the surface of the earth Among the notable aspects of this distribution is the fact that continental cores (shields) are underlain by very old rocks, compared to continental margins, which are typically underlain by young rocks. Note the distribution of volcanoes, and by inference batholiths, around the Pacific Ocean, where oceanic crust is subducting beneath shallower plates. Oceanic basins
