2 What we have done so far in this unit
Impact of ICT on Digital divide Legal and political systems

3 Catering for disabilities
Lesson objectives: Difficulties for disabilities in online services Developments in hardware and software for disabilities

4 Difficulties to disabilities in online services
Reading text is difficult for visually impaired (People who cant see clearly well) Understanding images is difficult for visually impaired Too much animation/video - distracting and confusing for visually impaired Poor colour combinations - unable to distinguish colours/text/content for visually impaired Physically disabled people could have difficulty in using mouse/keyboard for site navigation Following commentaries/audio instructions/movie or video soundtracks is difficult for hearing impaired Understanding complicated instructions is difficult for people with cognitive impairment/learning difficulties Understanding online process is difficult for people with cognitive impairment/learning difficulties

6 Specific difficulties on websites for disabilities
Page 97, Q 3 Hard-coded font size so cannot be changed by viewer Too much animation/video distracting and confusing Too many popups/adverts intrusive and distracting Colour combinations unable to distinguish colours/text/content

7 Developments in Software
Text to speech software is: Used to convert text that appears on screen into computer generated words/speech To ‘read’ documents aloud/from a speaker For those unable to see the screen properly Speech to text software is: Speak into a microphone Used to convert spoken words into text on screen For those unable to use keyboards Sticky keys: no need to press two keys at once/press first key followed by second to get action Filter keys: ignores brief or repeated key presses

8 Developments in Software
Head pointer: have a camera on top of monitor to detect head movements which will be converted into the movement of the mouse pointer. Magnifier/Zoom software: to enlarge text/areas of the screen so that these can be seen better Predictive text: to suggest words/sentences from a few characters/words typed in. Settings in operating systems that allow the size and appearance of the pointer, icons, text font size to be altered. Settings in operating systems that allow mouse to have different type of pointer and/or leave a trail so that people with sight problems can easily pickup where the pointer is.

9 Developments in hardware
Overlay (concept) keyboard: overlay with larger characters that can be easily picked out Tracker balls : these can be used with either hands or feet. Touch screens: characters on onscreen keyboard can be larger or images can be used to replace characters. Mouse keys: the number pad on keyboards can be configured to control the pointer on the screen.

12 How websites can be improved to support disabilities
Page 100, Q 5 b Increase in font size Zoom/magnifying feature Use of different background colours Use of alternative text for images Simplify complex language into simpler words Audio instructions can be downloaded

13 Homework – Antisocial use of ICT
