Lab Equipment The Right tool for the job!

2 Objective I can identify and correctly use common lab equipment used in the science laboratory.

3 Liquid volume is measured in mL
Beaker A wide-mouthed container used to transport, heat, and store substances. Can be used to measure liquid volume only if measurements do not need to be precise. Always read from eye level. Notice that there are two scales on the beaker! Use the one that zero is at the bottom (right) if you are measuring the liquid. Liquid volume is measured in mL

4 Lab Practice Take a beaker from the center lab table and place 150mL of water into the beaker. Get it approved by your teacher. Empty the water and place it in the center of your table

5 Graduated Cylinder Used to measure volume very precisely.
First, determine what each line means. Always read from eye level. Always read the bottom of the meniscus (the dip).

7 Finding Volume of an Irregular Object
1. Place water in the graduated cylinder. 2. Record the water level. 3. Sink the object into the water. 4. Record the new water level. 5. Subtract the two water levels. 6. The answer is the volume. 7. Change the mL to cm3.

9 NOW YOU TRY! In your lab journals, label each graduated cylinder and write down the measurement of each object and the VOLUME of B & D. A B C D.

10 Erlenmeyer Flask Has a flat bottom with a tapered neck.
The mouth, or opening, is used for pouring solutions and may be closed with a stopper in order to store samples. Always read from eye level. Sizes vary.

11 Florence Flask Used to boil liquids.
Also used to collect gases, if applicable. Sizes vary.

12 Test Tube A small glass container used to view chemical reactions or to heat small amounts of a substance

13 Rubber Stoppers Used to close flasks and test tubes.
The holes allow the insertion of glass tubing, probes, or thermometers as needed by the experiment.

14 Test Tubes and Rack Used to hold chemicals/tubes while experimenting.
Not for measuring precisely. Wafting is used to smell a liquid! Aim away from faces.

15 Ring Stand and Ring Clamps
Holds glassware in place for heating or evaporating.

16 Thermometer Measuring temperature. 3 types of degrees: -Fahrenheit
-Celsius -Kelvins *Celsius is used in metric system

17 Test Tube Brushes Cleaning test tubes
You must clean tubes before and after you use.

18 Used for carrying or holding hot test tubes.
Test Tube Holder Used for carrying or holding hot test tubes.

19 Hot Plate Used to heat substances. NEVER touch the plate

20 Bunsen Burner Used to heat substances quickly or if > 400oC is needed. Do not use with flammable substances.

21 Used to ignite gas from a Bunsen burner.
Striker Used to ignite gas from a Bunsen burner.

22 Rubber Tubing Used for a variety of things. Example:
Connecting Bunsen burner to gas valve stem. Connecting glass tubing together.

23 Wire Mesh or Gauze Used to absorb and spread the heat of flame.
Keeps glassware from cracking and breaking. Part of ring stand set-up.

24 Beaker Tongs Used to carry beakers.

25 Used to stir substances. Clean in between uses.
Stirring Rods Used to stir substances. Clean in between uses.

26 Used to show chemical reactions.
Watch Glass Used to show chemical reactions.

27 Meter Stick Used to precisely measure length. 1m = 10dm 1m = 100cm
1m = 1000mm

28 Funnel Used to safely transfer substances from one container to another.

29 Dropper and Bottle Used to measure out small amounts of liquids for experiments.

30 Goggles and Apron Used to protect your eyes and clothing from damage.
These are a must in lab!!

31 Flame Loop Used to collect samples from colonies (ex. Bacteria)
Also used to test the spectra of chemicals.

32 Digital Balance Used to accurately measure MASS.
Mass is measured in GRAMS

33 Triple Beam Balance Measures the mass of an object.
Make certain the balance is calibrated correctly before use.

34 Double Pan Balance Used to compare the masses of two substances.

35 For Example: How do you find the mass of 100mL of water?
1. Find the mass of an empty beaker which for example is 116 g. 2. Find the mass of a beaker with water in it is 217 g. 3. You would subtract 116 from 217: 217g-116g=101g. The mass of 100mL of water is 101g.

36 Now you try! What would the mass of 500mL of water be if the empty beaker is 116 g and the mass with 500 mL of water in it is 423 g? Show your work!

37 Pipette Disposable pipets used to transfer small amounts of chemicals.
Graduated pipets can precisely measure small amounts of chemicals.
