Gerrymandering The process of manipulating or re-drawing the boundaries of representative districts within a state to give an advantage to a particular political party.

Background This came about in 1812 because Massachusetts’ governor Elbridge Gerry signed a bill into law to benefit his own political party; then known as the Democratic-Republican party. The way he drew the boundaries resembled a salamander, hence the name Gerrymandering. The Boston Gazette picked it up and drew a political cartoon that related to this issue.
