In Japan, people wear their traditional clothing-Kimono (きもの) and Yukata (ゆかた) when important days come. Y: Every country has their traditional clothing. J: But in Japan, people wear their traditional clothing-Kimono and Yukata when important days come. (*) Y: Do you know the differences from kimono and Yukata? (*) J: Yes, that’s the reason why it made our group members feel curious. Y: There are three purposes of our study. (*) There are some differences from kimono and Yukata.

J: When it comes to Japanese Traditional Clothing, many people think kimono is elegant and colorful clothing.(*)

Young women's kimonos have longer sleeves, signifying that they are not married. Y: Do you know young women‘s kimonos have longer sleeves, signifying that they are not married?(*) J: Yes, and men‘s kimonos are usually one basic shape and are mainly worn in subdued colors.(*) Men's kimonos are usually one basic shape and are mainly worn in subdued colors.

During the 8th century Chinese fashions came into style among the Japanese. During Japan's Heian period (794–1192 AD) the kimono became increasingly stylized, called a mo. J: 794 to 1192 the kimono became increasingly stylized, called a mo. (*)

Y: 1392 to 1573 began to be worn without the hakama and began to be held closed by a belt.(*) During the Muromachi age (1392–1573 AD) began to be worn without the hakama (trousers, divided skirt)and began to be held closed by a belt.

Y: 1603 to 1867 the sleeves began to grow in length, especially among unmarried women. J and Y: Since then, the basic shape of both the men’s and women’s kimono has unchanged. (*) During the Edo period (1603–1867 AD) the sleeves began to grow in length, especially among unmarried women.

1、What type of Kimono would be classified into “married” and ”unmarried”? " Homongi " is 30.7% " Komon " is 29.9% " Kurotomesode " is 39.5% As the chart shows, in descending order of percentage of the Homongi (30.7%), Komon (29.9%) and Kurotomesode (39.5%). We can also infer that many people didn’t know about what type of Kimono classifies “married” and ”unmarried”. J: Let’s take a look the questionnaire. Y: The result of question, classifying the “married” and ”unmarried” and the right answer "Kurotomesode" is 39.5% which means less than 40 percent interviewees couldn’t distinguish correctly.(*)

2、What can we wear to attend the temple fair? " Kimono " is 39.8% " Yukata " is 46.4% " Shiromuku " is 13.8% As the chart illustrates, the average frequency of "Kimono" is 39.8%, "Yukata" is 46.4%, and "Shiromuku" is 13.8%. Due to this, the frequency of Yukata is not as high as we expected. J: Many people would wear "Yukata" to attend the temple fair; however, more than half interviewees (53%) people should think wrongly wearing kimono and shiromuku are suitable for attending the temple events.(*)

3、What is the difference from Yukata and Kimono? " Yukata have collar." is 31.4% " Kimono must to wear socks." is 60.9% " Yukata is more expensive than Kimono." is 7.7% From the chart we can conclude that, the highest rate, "Kimono must to wear socks." is 60.9%. The result clearly shows that more than 60% students exactly know about this answer as we expected. Y: As for the differences from yukata and kimono, answering "kimono must to wear socks." is 60.9% which infers many people answered this question clearly.

24 Results of Study When people would attend the important events, they must wear the proper color outfit. It is mostly possible to join one of the Japanese traditional customs events someday. Y: We have learned a lot on this foreign culture. Finally, here are some suggestions for the study of Japanese traditional clothing.(*) J: When people would attend the important events, they must wear the proper color outfit which have to follow the particular exquisite.(*) Y: Nowadays, it is mostly possible to join one of the Japanese traditional customs events someday, this study probably can provide standard information.(*)
