Revised third year in 2006, further changes to be implemented Mar. 08 Integrated “basic core” blocks, rather than separate discipline-based clerkships for the entire class of 150 students Required “advanced core” rotations follow the “basic cores”: Undifferentiated Care; Aging Adult; Peri-operative medicine and pain; Chronic Disease Required research - 16 wks “Third-year” starts March of second year

I. 16 wks. Surgery, Internal Medicine, Family Medicine II. 16 wks. Pediatrics, Obstetrics-gynecology, Psychiatry, Neuroscience Three main teaching hospitals implement the integration utilizing their unique strengths

5 wks IM in-pt; 5 wks Surgery; 4 wks FM+1 wk elective; 1 wk interdisciplinary Hospital 2 5 wks IM in-pt; 5 wks Surgery; 3 wks FM; 3 wks IM out-pt Hospital 3 4 wks IM in-pt; 4 wks Surgery; 8 wks ambulatory, 1/2 FM

4 New Curriculum (starting Mar ‘09)
3 basic cores I. 16 wks. Surgery, Internal Medicine II. 16 wks. Pediatrics, Obstetrics-gynecology, Family Medicine III. 8 wks. Psychiatry, Neuroscience 2 advanced cores - 4 wks each Undifferentiated patient (ED and Urgent Care) Elderly

5 Successes and Challenges
Increased opportunities for students to develop learning relationships with faculty over time Forced interdisciplinary collaboration NBME part 2 CK results similar to before curriculum change Further evaluation still in progress
