Physics Section 4.3 Apply Newton’s 2nd and 3rd Law of Motion
Newton’s 2nd Law of Motion F = ma F = force (N) m = mass (kg) a = acceleration (m/s2) The acceleration of an object is directly proportional to the net force acting on an object and inversely proportional to the object’s mass. Example: A net force of 17 N is applied to a box with a mass of 12 kg. What is the acceleration of the box? Example: A golf cart has a total mass of 270 kg. What net force will cause it to accelerate at a rate of 1.4 m/s2 north?

Forces always exist in pairs. A single applied force can not exist.
(For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.) Newton’s 3rd Law of Motion If two objects interact, the magnitude of the force on object 1 by object 2 is equal to the magnitude of the force exerted on object 2 by object 1, and these forces are opposite in direction. The net force on an object does not always equal zero.
