Bay colony (Puritan) – had criticized colonies “Christian” techniques and treatment of indians -land peaceably acquired from Indians -based on religious freedoms that Williams promoted (religious toleration; only property owning males participate in gov’t) -church and the government are separate -

It Connecticut -founded by Thomas Hooker -wanted more religious freedom than Massachusetts allowed; Mass asked him to leave – made verbal threat (first known act of aggression b/n colonies) -disliked the requirement of citizens to be church members -Fundamental Orders** first constitution in the nation - made a Democratic government. It was the first constitution in the colonies and was a beginning for the other states' charters and constitutions.

Pennsylvania -William Penn – given to Penn by King Charles II as payment of debt to the Penn family -Quakers (Society of Friends) religious group who practiced worship without ministers and were pacifists -Philadelphia “City of Brotherly Love” – religious refuge; rejected slavery; no war; women were equals to men -fair treatment of Indians -thriving colony; most democratic of all the colonies
