2ND PERSON: You, yours, yourself, yourselves

4 THESIS STATEMENTS NEEDED
Make sure the thesis (topic sentence) is about the subject. Ex: “One of my favorite things is kayaking and I will tell you how to master it.” Not focused on kayaking “Kayaking can open the door to new adventures and even a novice can master it.” FOCUSED

5 “FOCUS, FOCUS, FOCUS” ACTIVITY

6 CLARITY If it cannot be understood, it is of no value.
Use different types of sentences: Long (compound/complex/simple) Short Medium

7 Different types of sentences
Simple: called an independent clause, contains a subject and a verb, and it expresses a complete thought. Some students like to study in the mornings.

8 Compound: A compound sentence contains two independent clauses joined by a coordinator.
I tried to speak Spanish, and my friend tried to speak English.

9 Complex: A complex sentence has an independent clause joined by one or more dependent clauses
When he handed in his homework, he forgot to give the teacher the last page

10 Descriptive activity Describe the object using as many senses as possible. Make sure to vary your sentences and stay away from 1st and 2nd person words.

11 How and Why CAFE Rhetorical devices to use in your essays
How: how something can be done. Ex. To play a game of baseball, you must join a team. Why: why is it necessary to do something. Ex. It is important to work as a team because your baseball game will be stronger.

12 Caution Give cautionary advice
Ex: make sure to wear a helmet while up to bat, so the ball will not hit you in the head.

13 Anecdote Provide a personal story (only 1 0r 2 lines).
Ex. Once, I was playing first base and I caught a fly ball to get the batter out.

14 Fact Provide evidence that is proven
Ex. Research has shown that practicing baseball four hours a week, a player’s game will improve.

15 Example Providing a name brand, or scenario that happened to someone else. Ex. My best friend did not know how to hit a baseball when he joined our team, but at the end of the season, he became one of the best batters.
