Physical and Climate
4
How do landforms affect climate zones?
Examples? Latitude? Longitude? Altitude? Wind Patters?
5
Population Distribution and Density
6
Population Distribution
Population distribution refers to where people live around the world. Population is not evenly distributed around the earth’s surface.
7
World Population Distribution
8
Patterns in the World’s Population Distribution
¾ of the world’s population is found in two continents (Asia and Africa) 2/3’s of the world’s population is found in Asia
9
2 Major Factors Affecting the World’s Population Distribution
CLIMATE: Warmer comfortable climates attract people. Notice that most people live in a moderate climate region. ECONOMICS: We will come back to this later
10
Population Density Population density is the number of people occupying an area of land.
11
Densely Population Regions of the World
12
Area’s of Sparely Population Regions of the World
13
Too hot Too cold Too wet Too dry Too high
The “TOO Theory” Helps Explain why the World’s Increasing Population is NOT Spreading into new Areas. Too hot Too cold Too wet Too dry Too high
14
Population densities for large areas can be deceiving
Population densities for large areas can be deceiving. because the total area may have a sparse population density it does not mean that there are not some areas within it with densely populated areas
17
Why is population density not always an accurate indicator of population distribution?
Population density does not tell us HOW a population is distributed within a country. It is an average of how many people live in each square kilometer of land area.
20
Explain how climate and physical features have effected population distribution in the following regions: Need to describe both an area that has high and low population density within the region Must give at least 1 reason explaining how climate was a factor in the both high and low population density areas Must give at least 1 reason explaining how physical features are factors in both high and low population density areas 1. North America 2. South America 3. Africa 4. Southwest and South Asia 5. East Asia and South East Asia 6. Australia
