What is Plagiarism? Plagiarism is Cheating.
Plagiarism is taking someone else’s WORK, WORDS or IDEAS and passing them off as your own without giving the original owner/author credit.

What is Plagiarism? All of the following are considered plagiarism:
turning in someone else's work as your own copying words or ideas from someone else without giving credit failing to put a direct quotation in quotation marks giving incorrect information about the source of a quotation changing words or paraphrasing of a source without giving credit

What are the consequences?
At PCA, plagiarism can result in an F on your assignment, office referral, etc. Outside of PCA, people who try publish plagiarized works can face lawsuits, loss of employment and reputation.

Avoiding Accidental Plagiarism
What must be cited? All statistics, data, figures. Words AND Ideas: Direct quotes/words taken from a resource Ideas taken from a resource, even if summarize, paraphrase, or reword the original source. Basically, anything that isn’t your own idea in your own words.

Avoiding Accidental Plagiarism
Exceptions – Things that don’t need to be cited Common knowledge that the average, educated reader would know without having to look it up. Ex. Fact that water freezes at 32 degrees Fahrenheit, dates of National Holidays, names of famous heroes When in doubt, cite!

MLA Citation Rules MLA Citation Rules
MLA = Modern Language Association Sets common standards/rules regarding how to document resources cited in a piece of writing. Widely used in schools, universities, and publications across the world, especially in studies of humanities, literature, and language There are other documentation styles used in science, journalism, etc

MLA Citation Rules You must cite your source in two different places:
In-Text Citations: in the actual writing passage when you make reference to the source. Works Cited/Bibliography: on a separate piece of paper at the end of your paper.

In-Text Citation - Book
Much shorter than works cited citations For books, only include Author last name and Page number Citation made in parenthesis after the quote Ex. In the book The Secret Life of Bees, someone says, “If you need something from somebody always give them a way to hand it to you” (Kidd 38). In The Hunger Games, Katniss says about Peeta, “The more likeable he is, the more deadly his is” (Collins 128).

Write an in-text citation for this quote from To Kill a Mockingbird: “It’s never an insult to be called what somebody thinks is a bad name. It just shows how poor that person is, it doesn’t hurt you.” - Atticus Finch, on page 144 Atticus Finch said, “It’s never an insult to be called what somebody thinks is a bad name. Use an in-text citation and a works cited section at the bottom of your essay.
