Oprah Winfrey…on reading…
“Books were my pass to personal freedom. I learned to read at age three, and soon discovered there was a whole world to conquer that went beyond our farm in Mississippi.” Born in rural Mississippi to a poor teenaged single mother, Oprah Winfrey was raped at the age of nine, and at fourteen, gave birth to a son who died in infancy. She has been ranked the richest African American of the 20th century, the most philanthropic African American of all time, and the world's only black billionaire for three straight years. She is one of the most influential woman in the world. Oprah openly acknowledges the role of reading in her life and promotes reading on her shows. It has been claimed that Oprah’s Book Club has forged a link between social responsibility and literature and brought reading to masses of Americans. And by the way, she’s using new technology (TV) to support old technology (books)!
