About the Author Mildred D. Taylor

Life She was born on September 13, 1943 in Jackson, Mississippi.
Her parents were Wilbert Lee Taylor and Deletha Marie Davis Taylor. Living in the South during racial segregation was difficult for any African American family. Shortly after Mildred’s birth,They moved to Toledo, Ohio to make a better life.

Life as a Child The extended family moved to Ohio, but many remained in Mississippi. The Taylors would regularly visit the family that were left behind. This was were Mildred learned the family history through oral stories told by her family. This inspired her to write.

Her Awards Song of the Trees, won the Council on Interracial Books for Children Award in 1974. Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, won the 1977 Newbery Award from the American Library Association. She won the Correta Scott King Award for Let the Circle be Unbroken, The Friendship, The Road to Memphis, and The Land. She had many other awards for her other books, as well.

Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry
Mildred D. Taylors second book. Synopsis: The Logans are an African American family living during the time of segregation in the South. They are one of the few African American families that own their own Land. The story is told from the point of view of Cassie Logan, the third child in the Logan family. Her and her three brothers are faced by a harsh reality of growing up as African American children during the 1930’s in the South.
