1 Math Workshop For Parents (“Building & Using a System of Tens”)
Monday, September 20, 2010 at 4:30 p.m. (in room 219) Please join us on one of these afternoons to learn how different math will be for your child this year in third grade and how best to help them at home!! You will learn: How writing about math and speaking about math are clearly different What ways children naturally think about separating & recombining numbers How procedural math can interfere with conceptual math understanding Why using manipulatives helps children learn place value quantitatively What children need to already understand in order to work with numbers How to work with manipulatives & journals at home and on homework How to utilize “strategies” that promote flexibility in math thinking How to work with your child using a Systems of Tens method This is my best effort to acquaint you with how we will be doing math in this classroom this year. Please try to make the time to come so that your child’s math assignments will not be confusing to you and homework will not need to be so time consuming. It’s time to learn about the “BIG PICTURE” in mathematics – it isn’t about just “the algorithmic equation” anymore!
