Astronomy is a branch of science that studies the motions and nature of planets, stars and galaxies. It is the oldest of all sciences.

People /Animal Accomplishments Galileo Galilei The first astronomer who used the telescope to observe the stars and planets. Hans Lippershey He invented the first telescope. Yuri Gagarin The first man to orbit the Earth. Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin The first people to set foot on the Moon. Robert Goddard The first person to launch a rocket to space. Dog The first living thing to be successfully sent to space

Object Its Success Sputnik 1 A satellite launched by Soviet Union in 1957. Sputnik 2 The satellite that carried the first living thing to space in 1958, and the first to carry a living animal, a dog named Laika. Apollo 11 The first spacecraft that first successfully landed on the Moon in 1969.
