Many tertiary and quaternary industries are ‘footloose’ industries
Footloose industries are not tied to a particular location. They include high-tech industries and are located near motorway junctions or on the edges of towns and cities in business parks.

Key terminology Location factors – the reasons why an economic activity is found in a particular place Sphere of influence – the average distance people are willing to travel to get to a place Decentralisation – the movement of tertiary and quaternary industry out from the CBD to the rural urban fringe

Business parks – created by property developers to attract firms needing office and retail accommodation. Often including leisure activities. Science parks – contain high – tech industries and quaternary activities Synergy – the benefits of two or more industries locating close to one another. E.g. Science parks and universities

Footloose Industries: Normally tertiary or quaternary industries that are not tied to raw materials and therefore don't have such strict location requirements. Because of this they might look for more human factors like skilled labour, good housing and recreational facilities or access to capital.

The M4 corridor stretches from London to Bristol and along to South Wales.
New high-tech industries have developed along this main communication route, being described as 'footloose' industries They have grown up in the past 25 years in important growth areas and have brought prosperity to many regions. Location of high-tech industry is important to its success, access to raw materials is unimportant. Locating to an area, such as the M4, gives the company access to a motorway system and important communication infrastructure with London, Europe and the rest of the world. With a concentration of industry companies may share knowledge and information and have access to a skilled workforce. Use the information above to annotate your map.
