__ The Age of Exploration began in the _________century with the _______.

The 11th Century Vikings

This French explorer led 3 expeditions to Canada as he was looking riches and for a NW Passage; he never found it. He also explored the St. Lawrence River.

Jacques Cartier

This French explorer navigated the entire length of the Mississippi, building many trading posts and claiming land for France along the way. He named a large portion of land “Louisiana” in honor of the French king.

Rene-Robert de LaSalle

This explorer was first part of an expedition lead by Narvaez, and they searched for gold while hoping to claim land for Spain in present-day Florida. Later, this explorer spent many years trying to reach Spanish settlements in Mexico. He & his men were the 1st Europeans to see buffalo in the New World.

Cabeza de Vaca

These men explored most of the Mississippi together though they had different goals. Name each man and his goal.

Louis Joliet was the expedition’s leader and he was exploring the Mississippi River to see if it lead to the NW Passage Jacques Marquette was a Jesuit priest who wanted to convert natives to Christianity.

Many of the explorers were hoping to find a water passageway to ________

The Indies (or China, the Spice Islands, Asia)

The region of the U. S. Hernando Desoto explored
The region of the U.S. Hernando Desoto explored. He hoping to find gold and silver. He and his men were not very kind to the Indians in the region

The southeast

The name of the present-day state Ponce de Leon claimed for Spain (while he was looking for the Fountain of Youth)

Florida

At the time of the Age of Exploration, this European country covered more territory than any other country at the time.

Spain

The first permanent, lasting settlement in present day United States was built by the Spanish in 1565 in present day___________

St. Augustine, Florida

This explorer of the southwest region of present-day United States was looking for the Seven Cities of Gold. He did not find them, for they did not exist.

Francisco Coronado

He explored all the way from present-day North Carolina to New England
He explored all the way from present-day North Carolina to New England. He hoped to find the Northwest Passage. When he was in North Carolina, he thought he saw the Pacific Ocean; he was wrong. It was the Pamlico Sound!

Giovanni Verrazano

This man explored along the Atlantic coast of North America, from present-day North Carolina to Maine as well as into Newfoundland, Canada. He discovered New York Harbor and Narragansett Bay.

Giovanni Verrazano

This explorer of the southeastern region of present-day United States was hoping to find riches. He was very cruel to the natives living in the region. Though he was not searching for this river, he was the first European to see and cross the Mississippi River.

Hernando Desoto

This trapper and cartographer explored along the Mississippi River
This trapper and cartographer explored along the Mississippi River. He figured out that the Mississippi River’s mouth flows into the Gulf of Mexico (though his group did not go all the way down the entire Mississippi)

Louis Joliet

After the Europeans brought horses to present-day North America, the lives of the natives were positively changes. List 3 ways that horses improved the lives of natives.

Natives could travel farther in a shorter amount of time.
Natives could hunt on horseback, so it was it easier for them to keep up with the animals (like the buffalo) and hunt them more easily. 3. Because of horses, natives’ diets improved because they could travel farther distances and , as a result, they were able to hunt different types of animals (buffalo, for example) 4. Having horses made it easier, in some cases, for the natives to fight.

List four drawbacks or disadvantages of the Europeans moving to the land where the natives had been living for thousands of year.

1.Europeans brought many diseases that the natives had no natural defenses against, so many died. 50 – 90% of the natives died due to these diseases 2. Many natives were forced into slavery; they had to work on the sugar and tobacco plantations. 3.Their homes were looted and valuables/treasures were stolen Many were killed by the explorers Many were forced off their homelands Rats from European ships came onto the land and carried diseases and ruined crops. Pig destroyed crops and ate small animals

This is a 2 part question:
Why did some Europeans cut down rain forests? What happened to some of the natives as a result of this?

Rain forests were cut down because the Europeans want to build large sugar plantations there.
Once the sugar plantations were built, the natives were enslaved and forced to do backbreaking labor. (also, the destruction of the rain forest took away a lot of the natural resources the natives needed).

This English explorer was searching for the NW Passage; while he did not find it, he added to Europe’s knowledge of the Arctic and North America. A river, a bay and a strait are named for him

Henry Hudson

Why was finding animal furs important for some of the explorers?

Fur, especially beaver fur, was very valuable in Europe
Fur, especially beaver fur, was very valuable in Europe. Selling animal fur was another way for these men to make money.

List 4 positive outcomes of the Europeans’ arrival as it relates to the natives that had been living in present-day North America for hundreds or thousands of years before their arrival.

1. Horses improved their hunting, travel, and fighting capabilities 2
1. Horses improved their hunting, travel, and fighting capabilities 2. New foods were introduced into their diets 3. New technologies like plows, chisels, ax heads, knives and muskets helped them get food more easily 4. New trading opportunities became available 5. New ways of making and adding color to clothes were introduced.

_____________________is another word for conquerors, and they were called this because of their desire for gold.

Conquistadors

Why did some explorers want to find a water route to the Indies
Why did some explorers want to find a water route to the Indies? (2 reasons)

Because the Turkish Empire blocked the land route to Asia, explorers tried to find a western water route to the Indies. The spices in the Indies were valuable and necessary. They were worth a lot of money, and the spices covered up bad-tasting food & some, like salt preserved foods. Silk and porcelain were also found in the Indies.

Why did some explorers search for gold, silver and other valuable gems
Why did some explorers search for gold, silver and other valuable gems. (2 reasons)

Many of the European countries had been in many wars over the past years; thus they were in great debt because wars are very expensive. These valuables would help pay off this debt. Some explorers were hoping to get rich, and these valuables would help them do so.

Why did some rulers and/or explorers want to expand kingdoms and knowledge?

Kings and queens wanted to claim as much land as they could
Kings and queens wanted to claim as much land as they could. Not only did they want the land, they wanted the natural resources found there. They also wanted to use the new lands’ people as slaves. More land=more power. Some Europeans wanted to learn as much as they could about the new lands that were discovered. While some people believed that the world was flat, educated Europeans know the world was round and they wanted to learn as much as they could about the world.
