Gymnosperms Seeds that develop in cones or fleshy seed coating (may resemble a berry). Best example: Conifers

Male and Female Cones Each tree produces both male and female cones.
Male cones: smaller and softer Young Female cones: smaller, located in upper branches, scales slightly open to receive pollen. Mature Female cones: Scales open, larger, scales most likely missing due to seed dispersal

Life Cycle of a Conifer A pine tree produces:
Female cones in upper branches Male cones in lower branches Wind blows pollen from male cones to the female cones Pollen grows pollen tube and the male sperm travels down into the female egg cell in the ovule. Forms a Zygote The ovule develops in the see which disperses and then grows into a baby conifer
