1 CSC status report Muon IB meeting at CERN Feb. 28, 2012
6/20/2018 CSC status report Muon IB meeting at CERN Feb. 28, 2012 Jay Hauser Current status for: CSC Operations CSC Detector Performance (DPG) CSC Upgrades Outlook for 2012 run CSC organization for 2012

2 Status of CSC Operations
CSC detector ran well in 2011 Dead chambers /electronics almost stable Downtime decreased, workload on DOCs etc. decreased L1 muon trigger configuration fairly stable, but muon HLT not Readout problems – firmware improvements… Eff. loss correlates with readout rate > 60kHz (see next slide) New firmware are being tested at Point 5 (error event dumps) Other developments during Technical Stop: SLC5 migration, DCS revamp, and Emu online library update have gone well – numerous improvements under the hood Zero-suppressed ALCT firmware downloaded Problems on ~4 chambers seen… CSCs running+triggering in all MWGRs

3 CSC Efficiency vs L1 Rate
V. Palichik -0.7% LCT LCT efficiency is stable with trigger rate -3.6% -6.3% Segments Degradation of segment efficiency with L1 rate (up to 12% for L1 rate > 90 kHz comparing with LCT) -12 % Average for Stations 1-2-3 2012 2011B 2011A Higher L1 Rates are expected in 2012 at the planned luminosity of (5-7) e33

4 First CSC data of 2012 looks good
Triggering and readout in all MWGRs Occupancy (RecHits) in Feb. 15, 2012 cosmic ray run:

5 Status of CSC Detector Performance – DPG
CSC spatial and timing performance is robust Unaffected by high luminosity, high pile-up, or 25 vs 50 ns running No known problems expected at 7E33 luminosity! Have prepared for: Zero-suppressed ALCT readout (saves 15-20% of total CSC data) Run- and position-dependent dE/dX corrections DQM improvements More robust capture of efficiency losses, readout sync errors added Plans for much better monitoring ahead!

6 Status of CSC Upgrades ME4/2 upgrade ME1/1 upgrade
CSC factory in operation – three prototypes done Panel procurement starting to roll (from vendor Fermilab B904) New “Point 5 compatible” test stand is ready 1 or 2 endcaps in ‘13-’14? ME1/1 upgrade DCFEB pre-production boards in layout – schedule probably delayed somewhat due to high-rate readout problems

7 Outlook for 2012 Run SEU mitigation: CSC trigger:
will on-demand and/or periodic hard resets improve our up-time? CSC trigger: CSC Track Finder: single muon rate -3 kHz expected Expect more stability in 2012, since “only” factor 2 luminosity improvement forseen High rate sync loss problems – firmware improvements… Hope(!) it is solved before collisions (~1 month) Upgrades – schedule is challenging: ME4/2: factory rolling in ~2 months? Depends on panels etc. ME1/1: DCFEBs going into preproduction “soon” Expect a lot of reviews… starting with ~end-March ME1/1 review chaired by Magnus

8 CSC manpower “concerns”
CSC Operations - okay for 2012 CSC DPG group - very thin overall, and we have no-one dedicated to: prompt feedback on performance reconstruction software simulation software CSC upgrades – still lacking an ME4/2 electronics czar

9 CSC organization Organization for 2012:
6/20/2018 CSC organization Organization for 2012: Main changes were presented at last November Emu meeting NB Padley will be stepping down from US-CMS “Level 2” manager position soon (discuss) Further refinement (see following slide and more details in backup slides): Add Tim Cox as “informal” deputy PM (discuss). Tim has been attending XEB meetings for CSC while JH teaching at UCLA Formally, role of Padley, Golutvin, Chunhua is as country reps within Resource Board led by CSC Resource Manager now Dick Loveless (discuss)
