Parts of the Skeletal System
2
The Skeleton The skeleton forms the framework of the body
Comprised of 206 bones grouped into two main parts 1. The axial skeleton 2. The appendicular skeleton
3
The Axial Skeleton Forms the main core of the skeletal system and is more rigid than the appendicular skeleton. Comprising of: Vertabral column (spine) Cranium (skull) Thoracic (rib cage) Sternum (breast bone)
4
The Appendicular Skeleton
Comprises of the shoulder girdle & the pelvic girdle Clavicle (collar bone) Scapula (shoulder blade) Arms Pelvic bone Legs

6
Spine It is made up of 33 small bones called vertebrae. Between each vertebra there is a pad of cartilage which allows movement and prevents the bones grinding together. We refer to the pad of cartilage between each vertebrae as a disc.
7
Tendons Connect muscle to bone Tough, but flexible
Enable you to move – ‘middle man’ between muscle and bone
8
Ligaments Connect bone to bone Stabilize joints Elastic
Can be lengthened by stretching Prevents injury
9
Synovial Fluid Is found at the joint (where to bones meet). It is a lubricating fluid allowing smooth movement of bones at the joint.
